Author Topic: Wheel bearing removal (yep, I searched) (Read 6794 times)

The link above had good bearing removal instructions and tips (the only result from a search of 'bearing & bearings')...Here's the pictures of the bearings I am removing...I think I understand how the rear works (remove clip, push out the spacer) How about the front?

I looks like somebody mashed it up alittle in a previous bearing installation (nothing too bad). Do you just walk out the spacer as suggested in the above link like the rear?

Also, I'm getting these Lester mags powder coated...before I spend the mony on that...if any body can confirm these are Honda. I did take them by my mechanic. He seemed to think they would go on no problem...(1978 CB 750K) But you guys are the experts, any further info would really set my mind at ease...thanks SOHCers

Additional questions;

- will the powder coat interfere with the reinstalation of anything (plan on doing them 100% mat-black)?
- will I have to notch the speedo side for the speedo drive plate to work? (I still have my stock front wheel on the bike and have not seen the bare hub yet)
- I plan on using these wheels and I am ding a dual-disk MOD at the same time as I put them on

I usually just whack them out with an old screwdriver from the opposite side, in saying that I've never seen a wheel with a spin-out thing like in your number 3 picture?
I've also never seen the much talked about Lester mags so what do I know.

Just goign to ask one more time about that picture lable "Stock Brake side" I'm goign to try smackign that thing out of there...still wondering what the slots are for?

Picture one theres a clip make sure to take that off.
Last picture theres a tool to take that off but you can just wack it in the dirrection its supposed to come out or you can search and see some peoples hand made tools for removal.

Thanks....and I just thought of somethign else; Am I crazy to think the bears would be the same as my stock wheels?

I guess I have to get the out an measure them before orderign new ones....

Motion Pro makes the best wheel bearing removal tool. It uses a split collar that fits into the inner race, then a wedge that expands it. A couple of taps with a hammer and the bearing pops right out. They also sell a tool to remove the retainer, but they unscrew easily with a punch.

I just did this on a stock wheel. You have to remove the circlip in picture 1. In picture 4 you will notice 3 dimples around the retainer, these are where the they spiked the retainer to keep it from turning out, they need to be drilled before you try to turn the retainer. Once you have the retainer out, heat the hub with a heat gun or carefully with a torch, take a piece of pipe and drive one bearing out and themn the other. I have tried it both ways and with the heat it took 3 whacks rather than 20. Put the new bearings in the freezer overnight center them and use the old bearing to drive the new one in place. Done

WOW...no drilling required (not sure what you were talkign about?)...but after 3 hours of smacking, the destruction of various tools, the fabrication of the chisel smacker and multiplue hammer hits to the hand, the bearings are out and the rims are in great shape (bearings not so much)...thanks for all or feedback...going to the powdercoater this week...will post pics

Ok here's the results...I'm thinkignj I really could have left them in. But I guess New Bearing can never be a bad thing, especially on 30 year out wheels...the bearings say;

6302 RS and 6304 RS

Are those standard bearing sizes for a 1978 CB750K? (I'll google around)

How important are the spacers? In Skateboarding we always throw them out...I think my reaar spacer is slightly wraped?

That third bearing is not that hard to remove and it will be as used as the other ones. In fact all the heat from the brakes goes there. Why 1/2 step it when it you can have a nice fully functional rear wheel you never have to worry about again.
