tail light wiring troubleshooting
« on: July 21, 2008, 10:06:25 PM »
first off, 1976 cb550K.

switched to drag  bars over th eweekend and had a bunch ogf fun reconnecting half the wires in the headlamop bucket. two problems: once i reconnected everything on my little list ofwires i had disconnected, i noticed that a brown/white male plug had not place to go and that a female brown end was also hanging. consulting my wiring diagram it looks like the brown female is supposed to hang disconnected -- why i don't know.

also -- my tail light did not light when the bike was powered on. it did, however, light up in the third "parking" position of the ignition switch.

well, i took the headlight back out and traced the tail light to that loose brown female connector. i have poured over the diagram and cannot figure out how the connection from the tail light to the regular on position of the ignition switch is supposed to work.... so i jerry rigged a connection up to the black wires which power the front turn signal/running lights, which are hot in the power on position.

anyhow, the jerry rigged fix worked fine, everything turns on as it should now. but the tail light does not come on in the "park" ignition position and i am left with a nagging feeling that my jerry rig may come back to haunt me.

anyone have any experience with this?

bump

Wish I could help you - I've been putting off installing new bars b/c I fear messing with the rats nest of wires in the headlight. Some day I'm going to rip that mess out and redo it all using a bus.

Do you have any empty connections on your ignition switch?  After looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like the solid brown and brown/white wires should hook up to the switch.

I am also having trouble with my tiail light wiring on a 76 CB 750F.

Rear running light only comes on when ignition key is turned to the park position.

Brake light works while running.

Also have no guage light power. Not sure if these are related but the wiring diagram has both the brown (tail light) and brown/white (guage lights) coming from ignition.

Any ideas???
