NEW BIKE! Woot!
« on: June 26, 2009, 11:03:42 PM »
So I headed down to Columbia, TN for the S&G Cycle Auction on Thursday.  They had some really nice bikes there (and some real #$%*ty ones).  They had everything from a Brough Superior and Harley Flatheads to Yammy enduros and Model A sedans.  There were some nice examples of CB750s there as well, most of them 1974 models.  Unfortunately they all went a little out of my price range, so I picked up the next best thing there for a very good price (a.k.a. I freakin lucked out):

I would like to introduce you to my new project, a 1976 Honda GL1000 Goldwing!  Granted, it's fugly as hell right now but I plan on getting her back looking a little more stock and a little sportier.  The only thing I'm a bit worried about is the single carb conversion kit a PO put on there.  I've done a little research and it apparently is easier to maintain but a #$%* to tune and it craps out the fuel mileage and top end performance.  We may end up getting a stock set of GL1000 or GL1100 carbs  ;D

So without further adieu...  ;D

That should be fun project!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I certainly hope so!  It feels good to finally return to the Honda flock, even if I'm not all the way back to owning an SOHC4 (though I'm getting closer at least...  This one is an SOHC4 that just happens to have 2 cams  ;D)

Damn that bike fell from the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. ;D
What is it about early American bikes and those God-awful armchair seats, I mean either you gonna ride a bike or you gonna sit by the fire!
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Change the timing belts for insurance. When a belt breaks, it will be a very, very expensive repair.

The single carb conversion is popular on the early GL, but I like the GL 1100 carbs better. You can probably find some one who would be willing to trade 1100 carbs for the single carb set up.

You lucky dog.  Try finding another carb for that setup if you have problems.

And BTW, it IS a single overhead cam engine.  It can't be described as anything else.

Hush, beauty is in the eye of the Honda engineers when in '75 the Goldwing came out as direct and very successful competition to all Harley Davidson bikes...hence the styling.
All the later GW's had king+queen seats...I guess you have to match the competition head-to-head......personally do anything you want to a GW to 'couch' it up, but please leave the CB750's naked like the way they were born..!!

Wheelie bars...  HAHAHA!!  I managed to pick the bike up for $600 at the auction....  Not too shabby considering the two GL1000s next to it that both went for $1200+.  Of course they both LOOKED better, but what's a little fugly paint and rust in a project bike?

I plan to turn it into something like Randakk's bike, a sport-touring machine.  I've already gone the cafe route, I want something that catches peoples' eye but is also comfortable to ride.  I've been eyeing the Corbin gunfighter seats but they ain't cheap ($329!).

I may end up going for a decent shape stock seat if I can save some $$$

We'll see what happens!  First thing to go will be the pipes, windshield, handlebars, seat/sissy bar and paint job.  But that's all cosmetic stuff.  I gotta get her running first!  The good news is, since I only picked her up for $600, that means I've got $1500 left over from the sale of the XS650 to play with  ;D  ;D  ;D

Have you seen the photos of Tim (kghost's) Very Cool Wing? I'd show you, but my pc is on very limited operation for now. There are photos in the gallery and, it is mighty fine! Not that those others aren't. I was just kinda hung up on his version. Lots of luck with your quest Dan. 8)

Goodness, that is a hideous looking bike. Rest assured, just about anything you do to it will make it better. Damnn though, it's just hideous. I have to admit I would ride it if it ran well.

Wow...  For all the hideousness, someone really loved that bike.

Working it over I discovered it has a Dyna S ignition installed.  It looks pretty recently installed, too.

I haven't gotten her started yet, though.  I managed to break the starter solenoid I had bought today (from an 80s model Ford F150) while "modifying" it for use on the 'wing.  I'll use a hacksaw on the terminals instead of an industrial grinder next time!  ;D  Good news is, even breaking one and having to buy a new one, I'll still save about $40 by jerryrigging one on instead of the $60 for an OEM solenoid.  Hooray for being cheap as hell!  :D

So far I've pulled the slip-on pipes (it looks like the wheelie bars are genuine Jardine pipes, rusted to #$%* though  :-\), seat, sissy bar, highway pegs, handlebars and saddle bags.  Soon she will start to look like the sport-tourer she was destined to become  ;D

That looks to be a pretty nice GL.
You've got to watch out for Goldwings they can become habit forming, I started out with one and now I have three (they multiply when your not looking and there is to much money in your bank account!)

I have an 81 GL1100 fully dressed for touring
a 76 GL1000 parts bike
and a 75 GL1000 that I am restoring and just got running.

I would change the timing belts, You can get them at NAPA for half what Honda charges and they are the same belts. I would also try and find some original carbs. They can be a pain to get synced but when they are working correctly the bike gets right up and runs.

Good luck and let me know if you need info.
