Topic: Chain Noise

I have a CB750, 1978,
When i got the bike i felt there was too much chain noise so i purchased a new O-ring chain, rear sprocket, and front sprocket.  I had no idea how old the existing chain was.  At the time the mileage on the bike was 8,400 miles.  By the time i got the new chain and sprocket i had about 9,000 miles.  Now that i have the new equipment installed i still have more chain noise than i should.  I have isolated the noise to the chain at the front sprocket.  You can hear the chain click when the bike is up on a jack and you spin the rear tire slowly.  If you watch very closely you can see the chain move or jump a very small amount at the beginning of the chain going over the first one or two teeth.  As i have ridden it the noise does keep getting louder.  I think it is really loud.  The new chain was packed really well in grease when i took it out of the bag.  I have not used a cleaner and chain lube thinking that the factory lube is way better to start with than what i could put on it to start with.

I have adjusted the position of the rear wheel.  Keeping one side of the Axel fixed and then moving the other side forward and backwards small amounts at a time to see if my alignment was wrong.  The noise stayed the same.  I need help!

sounds like you have the wrong chain and sprocket combinations.

I think you should have from memory a 630 chain, what sort of sprockets did you get?? number of teeth etc..

I have chain noise too, but when I did my checks yesterday I found I had lost 4 rollers from the chain.  Time for another new one.

Chain is kinking at the front sprocket.  Wrong chain or front sprocket.

The rear sprocket is a JT Sprockets 41 Teeth, KTR333.41
The front sprocket is a JT Sprockets 15 Teeth, JFF331.15
The chain i got is a 630 series

Doing a seasch for those sprocket part numbers bring up nothing are you sure that's the part numbers? iam just trying to verify that they are indeed 630 sprockets to match the chain.

Ahhhh i see the confusion its says:

Front Sprocket: JTF 331.15

Rear Sprocket: JTR 333.41

and you posted

As far as the click sometimes with new gear they don't mesh together perfect from the start but get better as they wear into eachother so maybe a few more miles and it will smooth out.

I have the same exact setup on my 77 cb750k7. It is the stock OEM setup, and I have the same complaints. I guess the old 750's are just loud --- otherwise runs perfect.

How many links are in your chain, and is it tensioned properly??

Are the sprockets in line?

Front sprocket may cause problems if reversed.

I am going to a 530 set up.

I think the heavy chain causes extra stress on the counter shaft.
