am just getting into replacing the rear wheel bearings on my latest bike and need to fab a spanner.  in the meantime i have searched and found conflicting info on retainer thread direction for 550's.  have read that the retainer is "reverse thread, right = loosen" and also "thread is right-hand".  from this i assume right = tighten.

my retainer has an factory-etched arrow pointing ccw on the top surface.  the retainer is soaking now in PB blaster, but i'd like to know which direction to turn before i heat this baby up and make my first attempt.  many thanks,
bobp

Not sure about a '77, but the '75 bearing retainer is a left-hand thread (with the arrow as you described).
