Anybody know anything about the Kawasaki W1-W2's?
« on: June 27, 2009, 11:36:50 PM »
Have a line on one for $1000, have not seen photos yet, and don't know much about them other than they are rare, modeled on a BSA, and look cool. I can't even find any completed listings on ebay for them, so I know they are rare. What the heck is a complete, non-running bike worth? What else should I know?

That's the one, its a copy of  a BSA design, still trying to get photos from the guy and a call back, here's a pic of what one looks like, the one I've got the line on has scrambler pipes.

I'd say the bike is worth more than 1000 in parts alone, especially one as rare as that. I've never seen one with scrambler pipes.

Ah, ignorant bike owners. He posted pictures finally and it turns out to be a totally different bike, still cool, but not anywhere near as slick or valuable. I'd planned to buy the thing sight (but thankfully not photos) unseen.

The actual bike for sale is probably worth about $500 in non running condition. If it is "complete".

If it is missing anything motor wise it's drastically reduced.

That's about what I was thinking. At $400 and not 6 hours away, I'd be all over it. I just don't get why people don't stake a little steel wool, mother's, and rubbing compound to bikes like this before they try to sell them? It looks like he has some experience with bikes judging by the dirt bikes in the background.

Actually in the right market, the bike offered for sale would be worth more than the 650. It looks to be all there for the 1969 model and the seat/tank/side covers are correct for it. Kawasaki used 3 different seats and finding one like that is near impossible - that pan alone if good could bring $500. It took me almost 2 years to find the correct one and it's NOS cover.

I'm not suggesting you buy it - they are small and those exhaust are unique in sound - very "raspy" is how I describe them - a sound like no other motorcycle I've ever heard before or since. Mine is only the 2nd one I have ever seen and I've been around bikes for a long time. A guy in Jr. High had one and it would blister my CB350 and my friend's R5 (350 yamaha), so I wanted to find one like that one I'd seen almost 40 years ago.

If it were closer to me, I'd probably try and get my hands on it, not worth the drive though. I also really prefer the look of the earlier, chrome tank models.

I just picked up a 1968 W2 engine with an aftermarket GME plunger frame.  All I have are a few parts for it and I need carbs and exhaust and numerous other things.  It seems to be pretty hard to find anything for these bikes.  I'd love to have an original, but I cant wait to hear this thing.  Neat little pre-unit.

Does anyone know where to find parts for these?

There's a yahoo group for them; "weeza owners" I believe. Good luck.

I've got one! It's a slightly later model than yours, but the mechanicals etc are pretty much the same. You can't have it. :D

There's much conjecture about being a bsa copy. It did have that obvious style of the day and K'saki did acquire certain rights from bsa in the early '60s but, Well, I'd go so far as suggesting bsa never built anything for shopfront sale (with this sort of engine/drivetrain) as well engineered as did K’saki for the old W models.

The old W's were born at the wrong time. Too late. Bagged in some reviews and grudgingly praised in others it seemed. Poor market acceptability etc etc and.......that was a shame, because they really were a good bike..Overnight the mighty 4's from Japan swept all before them and the K’saki W only survived as long as it did, as a four stroke alternative , until the launch of their 900. The rest is history, (as they say).

The twin carby version was claimed to be good for about 115mph/>8000rpm. Not bad for a stock parallel 360deg twin,OHV 624cc. Well, I don't personally know anyone that did it, but I do know it likes to rev and will (arguably) do it more reliably than any of the similar configuration brit bikes of the day . And, they do it without leaking. Another plus! :).....and, relatively straight forward to work on and maintain, for its ilk.

Yes, most of the parts are difficult or impossible to come by.  I cant find any direct Kawasaki supply of anything meaningful anywhere. For example, the crank is one piece. Meaning, you can't separate the rods and bearings (and re-assemble)in the backyard shed. It's pressed together. Clutch parts might need to be made. The head is like gold and replacing valve seats successfully might be an issue. Most gaskets can be cut by hand, except the head gasket. Can be made. Certain other frame parts are interchangeable with other models of the time.  Probably still are examples out there in one condition or other, waiting to be brought back to life, just a matter of finding them. I know of a few, but can't get'em (yet). ;)...... I'm lucky so far because most of  mine remained in very good order, even after 25 years of non use/abuse.

If you like the sound of a 360deg parallel twin, you’ll luv this one. I’ve even seen one with 2:1 exhaust. Sound is awesome.

I’ve tried to attach a few pics of mine taken during a recent rebuild. It’s running now, but still needs some work on ‘cosmetic originality’.

Lets see what you’ve got.

If you need other info let me know…………... :)

Here's the pics. Hondaman ignition in tool box mated to 5 ohm Dyna coils. Works great.

Very Nice man.  Can you get a video so we can hear it run?  This wont be a project of mine for a while.  I may get the engine running in a couple of months though (time and money permitting).

Do you know where to fine the shop manual for this bike?

I don't have a vid of the bike running. I'll see what I can do shortly.

I only have a Shop Service Manual. Limited info compared to most, but it does run to quite a few pages, containing vital specs, maintenance/overhaul procedures etc...and some performance graphs... I,ve also got a parts book (loose leaf) with schematics, which you might find very useful.......If you PM me, give me your email address/contact details , I'll contact you with a view to posting photocopies of what I've got. ;)........Geof

Okay, I have to share this with folks who can appreciate it.  I just picked up a 1966 W1 with 1180 miles on it.  Yes, one thousand, one hundred and eighty miles.  The story is that a dog ate the wiring harness among some other rubber parts back in the early 1970's.  It sat in a inside for 25+ years, the was sold to someone else who's had it in his garage for the past 10 years.  Not sure if I want to restore it or (dare I say) turn it into a cafe bike.

I'm looking for any leads on parts, owners groups, technical resources.

Cheers!

There's a fair helpful sub-forum on the Kawasaki Twins forum:  http://www.armbell.com/kz400/index.php?sid=bc8f3f6ab7004bd704129f419b1f27ad&mforum=kz400

Unfortunately, the main guru passed away a year or two ago.  Still the whole site was originally his, and a lot of info and expertise remains.

Cafe it?  Ugh - *shudder*

Get ready to pay top dollar for anything related to this bike; they are rare and people that have parts for it know it.
Pros: You'll be the only only one at bike night with this bike.  :D
Kawasaki fixed the lubrication problems that the original BSA had.  :)
Ultra cool parallel twin sound.
Ultra cool (at least for me) drum brakes.
Cons: Did I said parts are expensive?  :-[
12 V Dynamo style charging system, so don't even think on adding anything electrical to it.
Caffeing this bike is relatively easy, and this bike is a British copycat so it deserves to be a cafe. The most difficult part is going to be finding the right tank. In my particular case I'm betwen a Manx style tank and a Honda CR350 tank. The backbone of the frame makes a little bit difficult to mount any tank but I'm working on it.
You can see the pictures of my "before" and "in between" of my 1967 W1.

My rules for this cafe conversion is that I can do anything as long as it can be returned to a restored state.  All of the original parts that I don't use will be cleaned up and packed away.  This frame is great because it doesn't need to modified to put a cafe seat on it.

Thanks to all for the info.
