Yet another bike...(need info)
« on: June 22, 2009, 09:51:32 AM »
So this weekend I traded a dude a tv and a crappy old acoustic for his 74 Suzuki GS400. Apparently it's the first four stroke from Suzuki? Any way it runs perfect actually, the engine was rebuilt about 500 miles ago, which was not long time wise, this thing is a rat through and through.

Any way I was wondering if anyone had any info on these bikes? Like quirk wise. Known for bad brakes or crappy handeling or what?

here is a pic

Cool bikes.

Favorite out of the GS series, for me. All the larger 4 bangers are so ungainly, in my opinion. This little twin made some decent power and wasn't all that heavy.
No.

Agreed. The 4's were all DOHC and they were huge. Kinda overkill for the size of the cylinders if you ask me but all of the GS line was pretty power potent.

Make sure your electrics are top notch though. I found that any "used" early GS has all kinds of trouble in the rust states when it comes to electrics.

Good trade.  Will it retain it's "rat" status?

A generic Honda cafe seat should work.

A little cutting here and trimming there - The dimensions are about the same as a 450 twin.

Sweet. I am Mr. Cheap and I just got paid. I am trying to put as little into this thing as possible. At least untill the Honda is done, then who knows I may make this another project. Probably not. I have so many other project that are non motorcycle related that I really want to persue.

Like what?

If you use generic mounting points then it should work just fine. If you are wanting to retain some semblance of "stock" mounting you'll be in for some #$%*.

I've got a full length movie I am trying to put together. I want to get back into painting. I also want to get back into music. I want to travel some more.

I hear that. I am just saying with this thing I am a cheap skate so I'll just find the crapiest cheapest universal seat I can and make it work.

Go to thegsresources.com.  I have a 79 GS1000 and love it but can't say a thing about the smaller bikes.  The achilles heel if the larger GSs is the chatging system.  I don't know about yours.
