YOUR FAVORITE KNOWLEDGABLE SOHC4 BIKE SHOP/MECHANIC
« on: June 29, 2009, 01:07:51 PM »
What shop is your favorite place to take you SOHC4 bike to have it worked on. What is the name of the shop and what mechanic do you trust or has the most knowledge about our old bikes? This is not meant to be a Classified thread but rather a resource of knowledge, parts, repairs sources.

Even if you do 90-100% of the work youself,       if you had to,        where would you go?

I will start with Phil's Cycle Shop at 1426 Crescent Lake Rd, in Waterford, MI 48327 (248) 673-6247 and Phil is know as "The Honda Doctor" Fantastic place!

Mark,

Please REREAD my original post   s l o w l y   and see what I am trying to accomplish here.... a resource of knowledge and shops.

This kind of info might be a bit more helpful in a specific regional context.

Mark, Paulages, and (apparently) Marcus are good mechanics who all have shops... they don't hang professional signs and I'm quite certain Mark isn't interested in posting their personal numbers.  If someone in Portland would like to contact them they could do it through the forum... ie the avenue you provided via the post.

Motorsports in Albuquerque has a mechanic named Benny who used to ride a 750Four and service them back when they were current.  He's the guy I would turn to first.

No shops in Santa Fe that I'd really trust; but Dave Liggon could give it a go from his home garage.

In Battle Creek Michigan, I trust Shorty at Shorty's Cycle on Colombia.  I did a top-end overhaul this past winter and had him hone and measure the bores and rivet on a new cam chain.  He is semi-retired and has been working on these machines since they were new.  Hell, he was the ONLY shop in town that stocked a points file!!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Dave Murre operates Murre's Salvage near Adell along Hwy 57 about 40 miles north of Milwaukee.  Phone: 920-994-9456  He is the only absolutely honest mechanic I have ever met. His work area can only hold one bike at a time because his small shop is packed with every known mechanical device.  He can make a frame, a threaded bolt, a bearing race, or step outside to his salvage yard and scavange the part you need from hundreds of chasis.  The good stuff is locked inside of a few truck-trailers.  Dave has built competition motors and bikes, and used to be a MX and flat-track racer.  When I take a project to him, usually in the winter, I park my enclosed trailer in his yard so he can store other customers bikes when he is working on mine.  Dave is also the President of the Kettle Moraine Riders M/C and sponsers an annual poker run, a hillclimb, and a dualsport ride.

I go to http://www.ehlerdingmotorsports.com/ for parts, so I'd go there for service if I had to.  they have several old Honda's on display and the last time I was there this was in the shop.

No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

In Kansas City there are a few places...  My personal favorite is Cafe Racer in the West Bottoms just a stones throw from the stockyards.
Incredibly knowledgeable and fair prices.  It will take 3-4 weeks to get your bike back but that's only because they are that busy!  Saw an early 80's Bimoto, not to mention a ton of old horses.  Anyhow here's a link

I haven't even considered having anyone work on this bike. This is mainly because this is my first bike (in pieces still) and it's for my own learning experience. There might be some good mechanics in the Minneapolis area (I just don't know who they are). Maybe if I knew what I was doing and had the dough, I'd take it to somebody for regular maintenance.

I don't want to be that Harley guy I met who takes his bike to the shop for oil changes. I also don't want to break down in the middle of nowhere and not be able to at least figure out what's wrong.

As others have already stated, I like my own shop the best!

I will start with Phil's Cycle Shop at 1426 Crescent Lake Rd, in Waterford, MI 48327 (248) 673-6247 and Phil is know as "The Honda Doctor" Fantastic place!

The only problem with Phil is that he knows he's the only one around these parts that works on these bikes and charges through the nose for it...

I'd recommend Honda Suzuki of Warren at 30822 Ryan Road Warren, MI 48092 (Ryan Road Just South of 13 Mile Road) 586-751-1200

Joe Dumka runs the service department and has worked on Hondas for over 35 years. Very knowledgable and doesn't mind you picking his brain about a bike problem.
"Every time I start thinking the world is all bad, then I start seeing people out there having a good time on motorcycles; it makes me take another look." -Steve McQueen
