Just got the cl350 cafe project done, submitted paperwork and wait....
Now the state of WI is throwing a fit and requiring the thing be titled as a home-built because some time in the past some idiot chiseled off the MFG compliance tag! Let's not consider that the engine and frame have apropriate serial numbers or that this was verified by the local sherrif's office... Nope, it's not a genuine crtified DOT vehicle with out that anoying little tag!

I understand it's their job to "do it by the book" but I wish they had a grasp of reality! this is a 40 year old bike after all!

I feel a little better now that my tax dollars are working. I've verified that. The little weasel actually answered the phone when I called to confirm this crap.

it's extremely easy to get papers for an old bike in IL but they fight you every step if you miss one little thing.

No worries on that.  Title it as a "home-built".  Any subsequent buyer will see right thru the DOT crap.  I don't think you'll see a penny of lost value, if that's what you're worried about.

As Havoc said, at least they're willing to put it thru.  They could have just as easily said "DENIED", and you'd be S.O.L...

I'm a bit concerned of the effect on the insurance rates for a "home-built".

Are you saying that this bike was bought without a title? If so, I'd be curious to know what the process is to get one in WI. I keep seeing some promising looking bikes on CL but they don't have titles and I was wondering if it's as hard as some people say it is.

not difficult just detailed. you need a MV1 standard form, photos(before/after condition), a letter explaining the reason it doesn't have the correct ownership papers, and a form for a law enforcement officer to sign off on the vin number.

Since mine was missing the MFG compliance tag, I also must either get a letter from HONDA stating it was made to 1970 specs, or apply as home built. Home built includes an inspection and a receipts for Items over $150 including frame and engine.

The guy on the phone agreed that in my case the missing tag was a brutal technicality, but he can't jepordize his job for it. I understand, jut sucks...

So basically you need to have the bike in road worthy condition in order to even apply for the title?

Also, have you seen the ads on CL for the guy that says he used to work for the DMV and can get you a title for your bike for $30? If I could find his info, maybe he could help you get around your tag issues.

Yep, don't forget that you are dealing with the gubmint and they are not of the less-is-more mentality.  Cross every t, dot every i, and go into mind numbingly extreme detail with everything.  It's more work up front, but it will probably save headaches down the road.
