DC out west, Canada and back
« on: June 29, 2009, 06:26:52 PM »
I may have posted the last one in the wrong spot, so I'll repost here and delete the other.

I'll be leaving DC on the first, heading out past Chicago, through Ohio, Nebraska, and a slight detour through Colorado and Trail Ridge (and a hot spring or two) before heading north to Jackson.  Google map of proposed route out here:  http://tinyurl.com/ngvocc

On the way back will be up through glacier (beartooth) into Canada, across past winnipeg, around the great lakes and down back through NY.
Route back:http://tinyurl.com/lkwax3

Anyone with suggestions or if you'd like to join for a bit, let me know.

SPWG,

When do you think you'll be in Colorado? Keep us posted along the way.

The ride out of Yellowstone to Red Lodge, MT is Beartooth. Seaweb, my buddy Newc and I will ride that 7/31. Too bad we can't be there with you. The ride across Glacier is Going to the Sun Rd. Two of the best rides you'll ever do. Throw in Trail Ridge and you have just done some serious riding. If you can, take a left shortly out of Glacier on MT17/AB6 and detour briefly to Waterton Peace Park on the other side into Canada first. I haven't ridden the Alps but the scenery and the park will make you think that's where you are. The first sight of the lodge you will always remember.

Have a safe and fantastic ride.

Jerry

Jerry,

Thanks for the pointers.  I'll should be arriving in Akron, CO on July 5th.  I had planned on packing a small netbook for the trip so that I could have easy access to the internets, but that didn't pan out.  I'll try to post updates as I go along.

I have my old riding buddy and wife headed down from Denver on the 5th. I'm firing up the smoker and filling the cooler. We plan on eating, drinking, and ride planning. Sorry I won't be able to meet up but you're welcome to make a diversion to Colorado Springs. Maybe some of the Denver guys can hook up with you. I'll get the word out.

I was born and raised in Wyoming. Some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. The way those plaines open up for miles then a sudden shock of wonder and awe when you see the Tetons looming over everything. Color me jealous.

While you're there you have to stop by the Bar J Chuckwagon and see the Bar J Wranglers. http://www.barjchuckwagon.com/ You'll see some authentic Wyoming livin' around there.

If you get the chance divert and go through Buffalo, Greybull and Cody and go to Jackson via Yellowstone  -this is a great route! I did it in 2001. From Yellowstone you go south to Jackson Hole with the Tetons on your right hand side....beautiful view from a SOHC ;-).

good luck!
Andy

Huckleberry hot springs is a nice undeveloped spot North of the Tetons.  Can't find a decent map right now but it's off of Ashton-Flagg Ranch Road to the west.

Seaweb, Newc (my riding buddy) and I will be in that area (Yellowstone & Beartooth) in 3 weeks. Too bad we couldn't do it together. Hope you liked some of my suggestions.

Ride safe.
