Members Leaving Really Sucks.....Sad Sad Sad.
« on: June 29, 2009, 06:53:14 PM »
Here's my first post in about 8 Days........

I logged on to find out Heffey decided to delete his account....

Seems to reinforce the reason I took 8 days off from here.

I have taken many breaks from here...some for as long as 2 months.

We sure aint the forum I remember joining.

I've gone through the same thing Heffey did and I quit posting in the non bike discusson topics about a year ago.

I'm gonna concentrate on getting my Cafe done and the shop spotless.

I'm off and will see ya all whenever.

Caio,

Tim

Keep us updated on the Cafe project Tim. I am really keen to see what magic you come up with in getting the pipes right.

The Forum is what we make of it and leaving is not the answer (unless its for self-help purposes of course). Keeping the topic on SOHCs is the way to go in my opinion and helping each other out, sharing ideas, talking mechanics and showing off our bikes in project mode or even better from the road then we`ll be fine. We are all joined by one common factor - SOHC bikes in all their shapes and forms. Enjoy it for what it is.

cheers
Andy

Thanks you guys...you were typing that I guess...while I was changing my profile and deleting stuff....

Its about the bikes....I 've sure said that before....

Lotsa folks here don't wanna talk about bikes....

Seems they wanna talk and carry on about everything but bikes....

I'm just not interested in that.

Sadly every time someone leaves...theres a resource lost.

I'm wondering how long till Lloyd, Mark and some of the rest quit coming in as well.

Hey Tim,

Totally agree its all about the bikes and dont worry there are plenty of us here who are all about that. So keep the faith!

Mark (Hondaman), Llyod, Mike, Big Jay, Gordon, You!, Ernie, Frank, Glenn, Sam, Brett (Bwaller), Kos, Mec, Magpie,  Mindler, Scondon ...the list goes on and on etc etc....are all still here and are an invaluable resource. Again its all about the bikes. Stick to the SOHC section and you`ll be fine  ;)

chin up!
cheers

I guess it takes all types.  I seem to be able to do both tech and off topic threads.  I was heavy into the political threads during the election.  Things got REAL ugly there.  I guess that's why it was deleted.  But I post in the tech threads as well.  I probably have more trouble there.  Like when someone asks the same old questions without doing a search.

What I really like about the forum is the family like feeling.  I often wonder about those who disappear without a trace.  At least some do think to tell us they are leaving or taking a break.

Come back soon K.

I agree that the other bull#$%* on this forum is a waste of time and just seems to piss people off, so I just don't look at it (ok, you caught me here). I stick to the tech forums and ignore this open forum crap (naked women and politics can be found all over the net... why is it needed here?). When I need help with something, hopefully someone's there to answer, and I'm happy to help do the same. This is a website about hondas. I hope the boobs and global warming and whatever the #$%* else doesn't keep running people off that could have things to offer.

Well, I know that I certainly haven't been posting about bike lately, seems like I can't seem to GET THERE  (and haven't for some time). :(  Tim, I sure hope that I'm not part of the reason that you are feeling down. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the
"Frankenbike" progress. 8) I mean, the pipes, the gastank, the brakes, etc, etc. 8) 8)  I'm hoping that the rest of us will hold together and keep the SOHC4 fully functional. The Builds, the ideas, the info, the experience and the folks here are just AWESOME!

I actually think this forum has a nice balance.  I belong to two sailing forums and one is very strict about non sailing threads and politics is totally off limits. A little boring at times.  The other has an open form like this and anything goes foul language included. It is a real flame war.  This forum seems to take it right down the middle and though a few times things get a little heated it never really seems out of control.  Granted there is a lot of stuff here with little redeeming value but I just ignore it.  Criticisms that may have lead to some members leaving seemed pretty tame IMO so other things had to be at play or else they had very thin skin.

I am guilty of posting in a lot of the Micky mouse misc threads. But if they removed them tomorrow, it would not bother me that much if at all.  Hey, that's not a bad idea....what do you think moderators.....time to maybe clean up this forum and put it back to what it was started for....eliminate a lot of the bull crap threads and such. maybe that would help cut down on the personal attacks and nastiness that has been going on lately. I am a relatively new member, but when I look at old posts in the various tech areas and then compare them to other areas of this forum, like the shameless post boost thread, I wonder what is happening here....is the forum being transformed into a general BS post place?  It might just start to look like a serious bike forum again. Don't get me wrong, on almost every bike forum that I partake in, there are those general discussion areas. But they are less pronounced than here.   JUST A THOUGHT.....Glenn, Bob, Others, ???

Frankly, this forum isn't JUST about bikes. It's a meeting place for people that love the SOHC4's. When people hang out enough, even virtually, a relationship is formed. Relationships grow and expand. Community is formed.

As in any community, subjects that are not the communities primary function will be spoken about. Need to be spoken about and shared together to promote the sense of community.

Honestly, if posts were shown as anonymous, without character, with only enough words to give necessary information, and a total lack of individuality, no one would bother coming here. People want information, yes, but they also want to be part of something human, and endless myriad personalities giving that information is what makes a forum like this human.

Of course that's going to spill over into other subjects. The non-bike related subjects help build that sense of community, and it's a way for virtual 'friends' to continue to expand their relationships in the arena of the subject, if not the subject iself,  that brought them together in the firs tplace.

I mean, #$%*, how many of you have called someone in another state to get help, from this forum? Friendships, though tenuous, are still formed even in this medium. Relationships are not made nor sustained with the simple transfer of data and figures. No relationships, no community.

And, to put it bluntly, do you really want to stick around in a place with no friends to dispense data?

mlinder......

...... you've got it right.

It would be incredibly boring if we had some type of robotic data base where I would type in the info about a problem I have.  The computer does a search of its data base and then comes back with a list of probable causes and solutions.

It would not be long before I would stop coming here.  Reading factual lists is tedious and very seldom satisfying.

I love the sense of brotherhood and interaction with people who care about the same interests that I have.  It is stimulating to read about the techniques and tricks known to other people and the experiences they have had, along with anecdotes of happenings out on that asphalt ribbon....... we've all been there.......

.....and it's so easy to picture and share the moment of that remote trip and that dark lonely night when the wind and cold and a broken clutch cable......

I've noticed that there is a whole helluva lot of drama going on around here lately.  People deleting their profiles in a hissy fit, then sending back poison pen letters via faithful members, all the while lurking to see what kind of drama their hissy fit has stirred up.

Puleez.  Are we grown men or are we a bunch of schoolgirls bickering about "he said, she said"?

Has anybody heard the phrase, "don't burn your bridges"?  Imagine if you told your "in-person" friends that you were leaving, and never coming back (the equivalent of deleting your profile).  How quickly do you think you would be accepted back by that group of friends?  Perhaps your former friends would simply kick your ass before you left?

Every time one of these school-girls pulls their little hissy-fit, it is an insult to the faithful members who have been around here, and on the predecessor email-only list, year-in and year-out without any hysterics.

Have to go with linder and rust. A forum about nothing but the bikes would die very quick. After all, sooner or later virtually every possible problem would be discussed and documented and then there would be no need for any interaction. Everything in a forum can contribute. We have bike of the month. We have other bikes. We have humor and open areas. Areas that talk about good sales and bad. How helpful that is! How many have been saved from old bike barn alone? We have our own little classifieds area. Point is, while some of it might be questionable, it all still helps to keep this going. If a section was not used, I am sure it would be removed.

As for leaving, I cant agree much with ed. People leave for their own reasons. I choose to look at it like this, say you are a drunk and go to the bar every day with friends. You need help and decide to get it. So you leave for a while. Is that showing insult to the other drunks? No, it shows that you had to work through some issues. Of course this forum is not a bar BUT sometimes a person has to clear their head. if that ends up being permanent, well so be it. That does not mean the person leaving is insulting everyone on the forum. Which is kinda ironic to say anyways as most seem to leave because they were insulted ON the forum.  I wont debate ed on this, that would be pointless and only validate why people leave. It seems that to some extent, I think most everyone would agree with me on this, maybe not though.

The forum is a great source of info, it is also a great way to meet people that you can visit on your next roadtrip, BUT it cant be your life, only an extension.
We cant expect everyone to get along, hell we cant expect everyone to even like the same beer! But we can try to step back just a bit and try to at least respectfully disagree with others. I know I am not perfect(before someone who also is not perfect points it out)but we can all at least try to not be outright @$$holes. ;)

Sorry, I just don't get the mentality behind deleting your profile.

I mean, if a person doesn't want to be here, fine - stop coming here.  You know, just kinda stop posting.  Take a break, take a breather, stop looking at the 'political' threads, whatever...

Deleting your account??  What is served by that except as a slap in the face??  What other motive are those remaining to infer?

And, if deleting your account really DOES delete all your old, helpful posts, well that's REALLY petty.  Kinda like "I'm leaving and I want you all to suffer too..."  Sheesh.

Moving on?  Taking a break?  No problem - life goes on.

Deleting your account in a snit?  Grow up!

Deleting one's account does not delete one's posts.  It just puts the word "guest" under the screen name.

Kirk, some peopel may do it because they know they don't have the resolve to stay away form the forum if all they have to do is open up a browser. Making it more difficult for themselves to return may be a buffer against the ease of posting.

As far as deleting your helpful posts when you leave, that I don't get.

The other thing is if you do leave for quite a while, your profile could get removed anyways. Now I do not know how long that period is but I am sure Glenn does some housekeeping from time to time. I just do not think that those who delete their profiles are doing it to spite anyone, at least in most cases.

Seriously?? Anyone that thinks the SPBT and other so-called 'unneeded' threads should just go away, should take the time to click on the treasury link at the top of the page. Seems to me that I see the names of many of the posters of these 'worthless' threads listed as having contributed monetarily. We can't all be technical gurus, but because of our common love of the SOHC4 we have a cool place to hang out and can contribute in other ways than just technical advice to keep this place up & running. Sadly, I think Tim has inadvertently created the type of post that's at the heart of the matter here and I'm sure that wasn't his intention. No member of this forum is forced to read or participate in any thread against their will. I think we are all needed to survive, and I think it is more than just the technical advice that makes this the best damn forum on the internet.  :) :)

How many times in one month do we really need to rehash the exact same pointless topic?  People are going to do what they want to do.  End of story.  Do we need to start a freaking support group every time somebody decides to leave?
