81' honda cb750 main fuse issue
« on: June 30, 2009, 12:23:59 PM »
just bought a 1981 honda cb75 and im having a frustrating issue.  The bike runs great except for the fact that the main fuse blows when the bike gets hot and only seems to happen in gears outside of 1-3.  I can let the bike completely open up in neutral for as long as I like and it doesnt blow.  I dont have to hit a bump either.  Ive been on the freeway and replace the fuse 4x to get home (about 3 miles). Im using the 30a strip fuse which I believe to be correct and Im on smooth ground.  So I dont know if its a simple short or what... Help?

Make sure your fuse clips are VERY clean and VERY tight.  Corroded or weak clips cause heating which can melt fuse innards.  A 30A fuse, eh?  Seems like a lot.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

yes, Ive got 4 15A glass fuses in my main box on the handlebars and my main fuse, in the left cover of the bike, next to the battery is a 30A strip fuse. Thats what Ive always had.  Though, I just noticed that the previous owner taped the box shut with black electrical tape and that there is a bit of corrosion on and around the connectors.  The bike ran fine up until about a week ago.  Im going to clean them now and test it out maybe later today when Ive got somebody around to give me a tow
