Topic: speedo has both mph and kmh

As the title says, is this the norm for North American bikes? The previous owner says the bike came from Canada, I have seen pictures of speedos with mph or kmh but havn't seen one with both. Just curious.

Yes they are both on our speedos here, we tend to travel with our bikes and don't want to get confused

Interesting. Mine just has mph, a 76 F1 UK bike. I am sure someone told me that some of the US bikes had both mph & kmh on them as well?

Canada had both miles and kilometres starting around 77 when we were switching over to the metric system. My 76 400 is strictly in miles, while my 77 has both.

It was 1977 when the Canadian regulations wantes KPH on the speedometers. To ease the transition for the old folks weaned on Imperial the faces carry both Metric and Imperial calibration.

Just curious here but which numbers are on the outside in larger print?

I honestly can't picture my guages and am at work so I can't check but I know my car has the Km's on the outside and in smaller print has MPH (also Canadian made like me!)...not usre if it's the same on ur bike or not...

Mine is a '76 F too, and it's green with white numbers, MPH only made by ND, which I think is "Nippon Denso", I would have posted earlier but I hade to find it, Since most on the bike is in boxes took a while. Oddly though the tacho has a oil temp gauge built in - definalty not original.

I like the idea of having an oil temp gauge? Can they be fitted easily, without changing the gauges?

Dunno, have to finish the rebuild, can't think where the sensor would go, it was just in the box with all the other bits.

I assume mine (78 750K) is Canadian made (or made somewhere to be shipped specifically to Canada) as the speedo has KM's on outside in large print and MPH in smaller on inside...

All speedos in US Vehicles have both KPH and MPH to this day. My 1976 TransAM had the dual dial. The KPH is almost impossible to read, which is OK since no one here would pay attention to it anyway. Some people in the Government have some delusion that Americans will some day give up the Mile, Gallon,Pound and Farenheight. I would not hold my breath waiting for that to happen. Shell Oil converted all their pumps to Litres in the late 70s and gave us a conversion chart. Well they changed them back to real quick when people went somewhere they could buy GALLONs of gas. We do like Metric wrenches, if a 9mm is too small you grab a 10mm instead of hunting around for a 9/56 or some crap like that.

I like MPH, if i'm doing 60mph I'm doing a mile a minute. if i'm doing 120mph I'm doing time, 'cos I won't be able to pay the fine 'cos of all the speed cameras.
