Found a decent spark plug socket....
« on: June 30, 2009, 11:10:00 AM »
It seems that everyone has a problem getting the spark plugs out of these bikes.  Usually, the 18mm socket is too thick walled.  Well, I found a socket that works excellently.

I went to Sears, and found an 18mm Spark Plug Socket.  Hard to find, but it works wonderful.  Easily takes out all 4 spark plugs, no clearance issues, with the valve cover, cylinder head, or frame.

The only bad part is that it costs like $4.  Expensive for one socket.  It even has the slotted (?) sides so you can get a crescent wrench around the top if there's no room for a socket.

This is very good news (assuming I can find one at a Sears around here).

I paid ~$6 for a thick 1" 18mm socket at AutoZone.

Or you can buy the original one from the OEM Honda toolkit for about as much from your Honda dealer. Just got two a little while ago.

Well, I did try to go the Honda Dealer route....let's just say I do not have a very helpful dealership.  I'm getting the vibe from them that unless it's a new bike, they don't care.  I called them up asking about the toolkit.  The parts guy told me it wasn't available through Honda anymore.  Okay, no problem, all I really need is the spark plug wrench in it.  That was a no.  He explained that Honda doesn't sell these separately, as they come with a toolkit on every bike.  I then explained to him that that was the reason I wanted the toolkit in the first place, as my 1975 field beater CB550 didn't have the toolkit anymore.  He said sorry.  I love my local Honda dealer!

They haven't been helpful with ANYTHING for this bike.  I've all but given up on them.

You need to do your homework first.

Just show up at the dealer and order whatever you need by providing the correct part number. They will place the order in the computerized system and when it arrives you will have it.

What happens is that they don't want to waste their time doing the research.

Partsfische, hard to argue when you have a part number in hand.
But if they don't want to bother helping you with a $5 dollar socket are they worthy of you buying a $10k bike from them? So much for customer service.

Buy it online from Western Hills Honda or another online source.

Bench grinder + 18mm deepwell socket = tool I don't have to find anymore.  ;D
Project Rina

That is an inconceivably egregious transgression against my rudimentary concordance of socially shunned individuals.

I got a regular Sears deep 18mm socket, works great other than not having rubber inside to grip the plug. I just use a magnet to grab 2 & 3.
