You'd get shot riding that around here. For crying out loud they shoot Golden Retrievers and cows thinking they are deer.

I've lived in this same neighborhood for over 55 years. We didn't see any deer when I was younger and this was a rural area. Now this is a subdivision in a suburban county, and I've seen more deer in the past 5 years than in the previous 50. We can't hunt them here because there's too many people, so the deer flourish. The buck below was standing in the street next to my house, not 100 yards from Interstate-95, the DC beltway.

all those sudivisions is good grasing for the deer, the only preditor they really have to watch for are dogs. Preaty safe digs if you ask me.

So I'm sitting here reading this thread and thinking what measures I can take to protect myself in the hills of Pennsylvania...

Here is what I've gleaned thus far...

1.) I need to get my exhaust pipes facing forward

2.) I have to convince the highway department to let the trees grow right up to the very edge of the pavement. (to eliminate the grazing area)

2.b.) Or...We need to import kangaroos from Austrailia so that they will compete for grazing land with the deer and they will kill each other off.

3.) I need to build a faring / shield with a razor sharp front edge and side protrusions to slice my way through meat in the road.

4.) I should always increase my velocity before hitting a 160 pound road block (with or without horns).

5.) I should trade in my CB550 for a Ural Patrol with a machine gun

6.) Lastly, I can now enjoy my two favorite hobbies at the same time (hunting and motorcycling) - life is good!

As a sick project that we work on when I am not doing bikes. We a have an air powered telephone pole launcher. Really nice at 3 foot sections

. Can launch a 3 foot section accurately for over 100 yards. Could strap one to a bike via a side car

. I know just sick. It might just do high speed circles??

about the dear whistles, they do work in a way. There are two types of deer problems, the ones that stand still and stare at your headlights the ones that dart out in front of you moving. The deer whistles are only meant to get the ones that stand still (espically on a blind curve) moving. A deer that is already moving is in flight mode the whistles do nothing for them. Basically there is nothing you can do for a moving deer except be viligant.

It amazes me just how frequently the few square feet that a deer occupies and the few square feet the front end of a vehicle intersect. I think I mentioned earlier, it occurs on average 65,000 times per year in Michigan. Very unpredictable, vigilance is the key. Encountered several groups and singles this summer. On one occasion I saw one crossing ahead of me, plenty of time for it to cross without incident, but I slowed anyway. Old adage, where there is one, there's frequently more. Sure enough, the first was followed by three others, all does, all in a line. Had I not slowed, I would have had serious problems with either #3 or #4.

Its a matter of perspective. He's about 30 feet closer than the mailbox, and I'm using a telephoto lens.
