quick cylinder head cover question(s)
« on: July 02, 2009, 10:06:52 AM »
Is the cylinder head cover supposed to just sit flush on the cylinder head when you put it on? i.e., mine seems kind of lopsided, should I just wack it down with a mallet or something or will this correct itself when I torque it down?

The bolts, tappet adjusters are both loose.

Also, the Clymer says to torque it down to 6-9 ft lbs...my torque wrench only goes down to 10. Considering I have a rather old gasket on there do you all think it's OK to torque them down to 10? Am I gonna strip threads?

Bike is an 82 650 Nighthawk if that matters.

I don't have an answer as to why it won't sit flush, but the cover should sit flush on the head so that the cover sits on the valve cover gasket. I wouldn't hit it with a mallet because it's stamped metal and may easily deform or dent. Also, I wouldn't be comfortable torqueing the bolts down until I had a handle on why it's hung up.

Sorry if that doesn't help any.

Hmmm, maybe the posts need to be attached to the cylinder head and not the cover? I put the posts into the cylinder head cover then put it on. I also did a tiny bit of bashing while I was waiting... ;D

I'm a little fuzzy about the posts; it's been a while since I had mine off, and the diagram in my shop manual is too small to make much sense of. If there are posts, as in alignment posts, I would put them in the head first. Are they threaded? Do they need the double-nut method for tightening down?

No they're smooth. I went ahead and put them in the head and put the cover on top. Seemed to help some. errrr, "double nut method"?   ;D

OK....so I think I have it sorted now...? First of all, I had the tach gear driven unit still in the cylinder head cover. Gears don't seem mangled so hopefully I am just out time and a small amount of sanity and not my tach.

The rocker arms on the #1 cylinder were also a bit tight...and the left side was not sitting flush...so I turned the camshaft a bit(I had for some reason turned the camshaft away from 1.4 SF) and it seems to sit flush now. OK, so all rocker arms are loose, sitting flush...I can just go ahead and torque this down now?

Break away. ;-) I hope you don't mean that when the crankshaft turns it will hit the cover?
