VFR750 swing arm on a 75 CB750?
« on: January 03, 2012, 08:59:11 PM »
I just read an article in VJMC Club magazine where a VFR750F swing arm was put in a CBX.  It was a very clean mod.  I have a couple CB750s that are headed to be cafe racer bikes. A single sided swing arm would look really nice.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the VFR swing arm where it meets the CB750 frame?  I'm just exploring the possibilities right now.

The VFR750 swingarm could be a 1994 through 1997.  I think they are all the same...I think.

I remember the single side swing arms came out in 1990 and then on up.  Also the Hawk GT had single side arm, too.  The Hawk did not have the linkage that the VFRs had.  May make easier to fab.  BTW, the RC30 and the RC45 had one, too.

I think I'm going to have to find one at a salvage yard and take measurements.  It doesn't look like anyone has done this before on an old CB.

On a single sided arm the width can always be altered, its the length that will pose most problems. Its extremely hard to shorten a single sided arm, anything over around 2 inches longer than stock will effect handling quite a bit. If you just want it for looks then full steam ahead.... I have seen them on the DOHC boldor Honda's, i have some pics somewhere....

Good point Retro. I know it is longer than the stock CBX swing arm per the article in VJMC this month.  Going fast in a straight line isn't all that bad either ;0)

I have seen one on a cbx as well. The only place they could be shortened would be where the raer shock sits at the front of the arm but if i remember correctly, those VFR arms are cast and i probably wouldn't want to be cutting and welding cast alloy on a swing arm....Although i am not too sure about that..

Nah, you would not want to cut the arm at all or risk losing rigidity with a single side of connection. You'll just have to be content with the stock length of the arm and do a good deal of fabbing to get the arm on.

I have seen a 3rd gen VFR swingarm put on a 2nd gen VFR frame, but that's not too big of a stretch, just a lot of farbrication.

I do not know WHY you would want a single sided swing arm.
Makes no sense.
It is much harder to work on. Twin shocks are so easy to work with.
A single sided swing arm has a great twisting motion being applied.
The frame of the older bike was not designed to support that.

It also looks peculiar like a misfitment.

+1 It's going to look miss-matched.

Easier to get wheel off..get to look different, clean up the back end.. a few reasons. Narrowing arm..i think they meant trimming a few MM to get it inside the frame.
I just picked up a complete Hawk setup, might not keep it.. makes the wheelbase 3.5 in linger at midpoint of arm which i like..

By fits I mean that it just slides into the frame, if there is outer caps then that will need trimming or narrowing.

The person that started this thread about the CBX in the VJMC mag, well the guy that build the CBX is a friend of mine and took me about 5 years to get the CB750 on the schedule (more or less).  It took about a year and a half, a lot of fun to do, but figured out how to make it work and very happy with the result.  Once I have some proper photos taken I will share and include all the details of the build.

Still tuning it.  With the CR carbs we wanted a way to synch the carbs. So we figured a way to install ports on the inlet tubes. With that done its a seat of the pants to get it perfect, but I would describe it as primal to ride.
