holy #$%* been hitting these screw with an impact driver and PB Blaster for 10 minutes and not a single one has sprung loose  >:(

To get my stubborn screws out, I hit then with a heat gun & PB Blaster and then used the bit from my impact driver and tapped it in there pretty firmly with a hammer and used a small 1/4" ratchet and socket for a little extra leverage....
Seemed to work better than the impact driver.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Good idea, I'll go try that now.

Well, using a ratchet attached to the bit from the impact driver kinda worked. I got two loosened...I'll try using the heat gun, I thought heat some what expanded the metal though?

You will go through a lot of time, rouge and wheels if you try to get the clearcoat off with the buffer.  Get some Aircraft Stripper and that will take the clear off first.  Then hit them with the buffer.

My real worry is with these stupid screws. I'm needing some alternative idea's on how to remove 'em. I've tried hittin 'em constantly with the impact driver, using pb blaster, using the rachet...

Maybe a pneumatic impact driver? I have no idea. I'll keep trying with the impact driver.

Didn't someone say there was a really good penetrating oil they used?

Make sure your driver is set right.  I had an impact driver that once I would hit the thing, it would reverse itself.  Just wanted to pass that on to you.

Ha, ya it should be on the 'L' Setting which is counter clockwise. It's been working. Im down to just two screws left. Both stripped really bad...But the impact driver isn't slipping yet...If I can get this thing removed tnite, I'm gonna start in with the sanding.

Edit: Whats with the little bolt at the bottom? Isn't it attached to something? So when I pull of this cover, will something fall out of place? Also, what about the clutch disengage lever?

3M roloc discs are the way to go.
Use the maroon ones to remove oxidation and clear leaving a nice satin finish.
Then the red rouge removes the Roloc scratches and so on.
Absolute fastest/easiest way, I have found.
X= an unknown quantity
Spurt= a drip under pressure!

If you can chisel or grind off the heads you can get the cover off.  Then there should be some of the screw shaft to get a bite on with a vise grips to turn it out.

Yep, I think I'm gonna use an ez-out drill bit first, give that a try, then just hammer off the head.

I would drill those heads off...  probably easier.  But hopefully you got them by now.

+1 on the aircraft stripper.  If you use the 3M product, let us know what you think.

I used a chisel, impact driver w/ the flat head bit and also these:




I got all the screws off and it still wont budge! How the hell can i get this thing to move?

I suppose with the clutch engaged the lever on the crank cover is attached to something inside that might be preventing it from coming off? In the shop manual, all it said was remove the 10 screws, and then pull the cover off...VERY helpful for a beginner...  ::)

Anyway, here are some pictures of where I'm at with the other parts:







I made sure I went different directions after each grit paper, to be certain I was removing the scratches from the previous. But...Even with 1500 grit paper, there is still noticeable scratches, this is normal right? Which is why you need to do the rouges now, correct? Or...Did I mess up? I know it looks bad, especially the crank cover...

Just to be certain, I use the Tripoli (Brown) rouge first, then the white rouge. So where does the red rouge fit in? On the container, it says the red is for 'bright luster on silver plate, gold, sterling, other precious metals'.

Can't really tell from the pic how deep the scratches are.  Shortly after you buff with the white rouge, you will know for sure.  It can be hard to tell if you sanded enough through the different grits.

Ya, i think i got them all out. I just finished up with the white wheel on all the parts and I'm pretty happy. There are still some very minor scratches noticeable. What brand/type of rubbing compound can I use to finish it up?

I saw a 3M Rubbing Compound product that said it takes scratches out of 1500 grit, which I thought wasn't good enough considering I used 1500 and then also the rouges. I'm worried that stuff might even scratch more? So just maybe mothers mag and aluminum polish?

Ok, so they're not perfect but I'm happy. I rinsed them off, and once dried the water marks left a stain. I had to use denatured alcohol on them to clean up. Now what should I use to protect them? I'm worried about using a product that'll scratch it  :-[

If these are your first, not too shabby there.  With regards to the scratches, that is a tough call in a way.  The compound might be the black one with tight sewn wheel or you get the start sanding again. and hope you get the scratches out.

If they are small and you have to get real closeto see them, fuggedaboutit.

Those scratches you see could be the the first grit you started with and you didn't sand enough on the next lower grit.  It happens.

Seal them?  I never have.  That is a question that has opinions that go both ways.

I've always heard regular car wax was the way to go, just get whatever's cheap and put a half dozen coats on.

Yep, been there read that. Well I can't wait to do this again, not that I'm saying I intend to let the parts oxidize so I can enjoy another season of buffing stuff...But, maybe I'll buy a bench buffer and polish any other aluminum parts in my house!

I think seaweb said it best, "The buffer is just the candy at the end ;D"
