The helmet law census thread
« on: July 02, 2009, 12:28:36 PM »
1. Please state the area where you live and ride in (be it a state in the U.S., or a location in any other part of the world).

2. Does the law there require you to wear a helmet?

3. If there is no helmet law where you ride, do you wear one anyway?

I'll start.

1. I live in Michigan near the Indiana border.

2. There is a helmet law in Michigan, but not in Indiana.

3. I usually wear a helmet while riding in Indiana, but I must admit, it's nice to ride without a helmet.

I'm from MA where you have to wear a helmet. ME, NH, RI and I believe CT which are all contiguous states don't have helmet laws. I always wear a full face helmet because: no bugs, my bald pate doesn't burn, and my singing sounds better.

Kansas, helmet required if under 18 otherwise none.
Ride into missouri frequently, helmet required there although it's under appeal.
The revision they're looking for is under 18 and Interstate riders must have a helmet on.

I don't usually wear one.

i live in "we'll sue any and everyone, bubble wrap everything" Ca.
oh and tax everything that moves. and hows that working so far.

i would still wear a helmet, for the family's sake.

i remember my mom was a member of the MMA (modified motorcycle assn) back in the late 80's. i got a bunch of stickers that said F*** the helmet law. i put them all over my skateboard.
ah those were the days.

Minnesota does not require you to wear a helmet.  I will usually wear one if I am going to be riding on the highway but around town, the lakes, and the river road I wear my leather flying helmet.  I make my passenger ,if any, wear a helmet at all times.

In Ohio, over 18 not required. I admit that there have been lots of times that I have ridden without a helmet. But after this accident, I will probably ride with the helmet 95% of the time. The 5% will be where I believe that the likelyhood of being hit by a cager is nil to 0%. Can't say enough times that I was unlucky to get hit, but lucky to be alive. It was the gear that saved me.

NY has had a Helemt law since I got my license in 1968 so I have never ridden without one. I use a full face. I am 20 mins from Ct which is Helmet optional. I wear one when I cross the border, I figure the pavement is no softer in Ct than NY.

Indiana.
As stated earlier, no helmet required over 18 with valid motorcycle license.
I am currently still on my permit, so I am required to wear one and cannot ride at night.
Even after I get my endorsement to ride I will continue to wear a helmet.

In Arizona,

No helmet law here.  You've still got the right to your own choice.

I ride with a full face helmet all the time,....... not 5 seconds without one.

Helmets have more than likely saved my life more than once...... used to skydive,....... I prefer that to windshield diving.

Here in the great state of TEXAS/ we have no helmet law if over 18.  I wear one almost always (not when test riding around the block) and when I am on the highway I wear full face because the noise with my half helmet deafens me.

i'm in South Carolina. there is no helmet law and i think it's foolish to not wear one, worse than foolish it's plain dumb.

Illinois has No helmet law, but I still wear one regardless.  Besides, it cuts down the wind noise and the bugs up the nose :P  I think I can count on one hand the number of times in 30+years of riding that I have been on the road without one.

I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong, the entirety of Canada requires helmets from everyone. I would still wear one. My full face has saved my facial features on numerous occasions. Most of them offroad. Still. A few of my friends wear those little beanie things they call half helmets. I can just picture their faces with their nose where their forehead should be. Yeah. Sounds comfy doesn't it? No.

Live in Virginia, and also ride in Washington D.C. and Maryland.  Currently all require helmets, and wouldn't ride without a full face.  The exceptions are when I am riding my 40 year old CT70(never over 15 MPH) and in parades(I've done Rolling Thunder a couple times, a few years back).

Missouri just repealed it. As long as you're 21 and not on an interstate highway, no helmet is required.

I wear one anyway.

From BC,, west coast Canada.

We have had a helmet law almost the whole time, since 66.

I dont always wear one, in non helmet states..

Have done a full face plant at 15 mph without a helmet  :o, and contrary to popular belief, it will not kill or maim you too bad (although it could).. not a really nice feeling BTW, if you wanted to know.. >:(
