'70 CB 750 K0 Instrument light cover
« on: July 02, 2009, 12:58:08 PM »
I'm bringing a recently purchased 70 cb750 k0 back to life and the little colored light cover inside the tach--green for neutral, red for oil pressure have come off and are floating around inside the cover.

The tach has a plastic body not the metal one.

Anyways my question is how do I get the cover apart to get to the face of the tach so I can re-attach these things? I've tried everything i could beside short of wrecking the palstic.

There is a pciture of the tach here:

Thanks for any help.

I need to do a set one of these days and I'm afraid you're going to have to cut the plastic.  Don't know where they are offhand but there are several threads related to doing just that.  You could try searching or maybe someone will chime in.

I have taken both of mine apart on my KO.  Note on the very botton of the unit underneath is a plastic lip.  You have to carefully break that lip off.  Then the unit will slip out with the help of a small screwdriver.  Those colored lenses can be glued back in there.  Once you reassemble I have seen people use caulk or electrical tape to hold it in place.  I used the tape method as it is covered when you put the chrome bottom back on.  Plus, the tape I can easily remove to get inside again if needed.  While I had mine apart I went to a model store and got some orange paint to do the tip of the needed again.  Do not use any harsh cleaners on the OEM number faces as the color will come off.  I used a plastic polish on the inside and outside of the clear lense and it turned out real nice.

I wish I didn't have to wreck the plastic but you gotta do what you gotta do right!

Yah, I hear you.  That is the only way to do it.  You could use an Exacto Knife and cut that lip off too.  Comes off pretty easy.

Johnie,
Did you get new faceplates for your tach and speedo. Mine are in pretty rough shape the paint on the face looks like and old farm barn, the paint is all wrinkled. Do you haev any idea where these can be purchased. I've looked everywhere on-line andcan't find them.

Thanks for any help.

Or you could just use a colored bulb...

Check this post. I used a set from clocksndials, quite pleased with them, but as you see, there are other sources.

As you will see in Bob's post I got mine from www.yamiya.com from Japan.  Quality is tops, but you will pay around $180 for the 2 faces.  They are not stick-ons but the real deal.

Just thought I would mention this. When I rebuilt mine, on examining the original bulbs, I found them to 'carboned' quite a bit on the inside of the glass so they were not as bright as they once were. The original bulbs are spherical in shape.

I hunted all over for exact replacements, but never found any. However, I did find some  GE 1891 bulbs, they are 12V but rather than round, they are somewhat elongated, thus slightly taller. I replaced all mine with these and low and behold, they are noticeably brighter because they're new and it puts the top of the bulb slightly closer to the colored lens. I have no problem noticing them even in sunlight. It helps for those times when I forget to cancel a turn signal.  ;)
