looked all over but no luck.. Wiring harness....
« on: May 26, 2009, 11:13:54 PM »
Ok ive looked all over and also downloaded the simple wiring harness pic.  but was wondering.   in the pic their was no fuse in the pic.  should I put fused in their or just wire it up like the pic with no fuses?  also if I should add fuses where would I put them as I look at the pic.   my next question is I though I red on here their was someone making a wiring harness that fit in and looked like an oil tanks does anyone have the link for that or know where I can get it? Im building a cb550 chopper and want the look of an oil tank but wanted to put all of the harness in their. Im finally starting to piece this all together and want to get most of the pieces I need before I build it.    Thanks in advance.

To the best of my knowledge, all battery-driven Honda wiring harnesses are fused for safety purposes.  What diagram/picture did you download?  Please post.

This is the one I down loaded..  http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=c2mckob72gt&thumb=4

I was just curious where to put fuses to save the system.  I understand the wiring diagrame its easy to follow just need to know where I should put my fused.  And I also found the oil tank wiring box so no need for the help on that anymore.

Can't say I've seen that drawing before.  It looks like something that might have come out of Easy Rider Magazine.

Regarding the fuse, the drawing shows one coming off the battery side of the ignition switch.   30 amp is probably more that I'd feel comfortable using, but I guess that depends on what size wire you've got in mind.

dan thanks that one helps too but will see about wiring everything withought turn signals and such.  also is their a way to not one a kill switch?   I want to be able to just turn my bike off with the key to keep less clutter on  the bars.

theres a 30 amp inline fuse in that pic, just to the left of the key switch

Now I see the 30amp fuse.  I didn't see that before.

Sorry to jump on the thread and change course here, but I have a similar question with the wiring.

What I did was instead of starting from scratch I "scaled-down" the preexisting harness, basically chopped everything off before it spider webbed all over the place. The only wires I kept forward of the carbs were the coil wires. That took it down to around 5-8 wires. I'm also not going to be using the handlebar switches, or a key switch, or a high beam for that matter.

My question is, in that diagram (http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring750K1.html) there's a (r/y) wire from the switch to the solenoid, and a (b) ground from the switch. Can that ground be to the frame, or does it need to go to the battery (-) for some reason? My other question is, is it really that simple?!

You could ground it to the frame.  I'm working on making my wireing harness here soon after I get my frame welded up and powder coated.

OK good deal.

By the way, I re-wired the power to the speedo, tach, and headlight, but for the ground would it work better to ground to the frame, or the thick green ground wire? I would assume it would make no difference, but assumptions have left me stranded before! Haha 8)

It's appreciated Beans

well I would ground it where ever works best and looks clean. if their is a ground wire near the steer tube use it or ground it somewhere under the tank like the coil pack bolts so u wont see it.

See the thing is, I'm ditching all the switches on the bars, and simplifying with an on switch and start button mounted on the pop-off panel on the LH side, with the wiring routed into the factory "toolbox". It's almost done now though, I used the heavy-guage ground wire for the start button ground, and routed everything else off the switch. Which isn't much, and that's part of what's throwing me off.

Do you or anyone else know how the coil wires need to be as far as the B/W wire in relation to the on switch? Does that wire need to get power switched to "on", or does it need to ground out when switched to "on"? The diagram doesn't really make it obvious, and I'm a relatively dull knife if you get what I'm saying...

OK looking at the diagram and running the hamster wheel's bearings red-hot I've come to the conclusion that the B/W wire should just be on it's own switch, and ground for the bike to run, open circuit to shut the engine off.

If i'm wrong please someone let me know, I'd rather give it away than burn it down!

In the stock harness, the B/W wire feeds power to the coils by way of the kill switch.  The kill switch receives power from the black wire, which comes from the regulator.  The coils are grounded via the points.

If you go to http://oldmanhonda.com/MC/wiring750K1.html and turn off everything but the alternator and coils circuits, it makes sense.

Ha! I might have screwed up somewhere then, because that thicker-guage black wire is registering as a ground using a test light.??
