H rated tire on front & V rated rear
« on: July 02, 2009, 12:59:57 PM »
If it's the same manufacturer and the same model tire, is this "mismatch" OK?  Aren't V rated stiffer which might cause an unbalanced situation?  Specifically I'm referring to Metzeler Lasertec's.

Unless you spend most of your time at or above 100mph.....

I wouldn't worry about it until they start to show serious wear. The v-rated tire is slightly different and acts differently at the end of it's life.

I would think it's fine as long as you stay within the H's rated speed range.  Tires are't 'harder' because they have a higher speed rating, it's just a slightly different design, but nothing you'll notice from the outside of the tire or by the seat of your pants.

I think I remember reading somewhere that this is actually dangerous...something about different rubber compounds or something...If you're concerned call up Metzeler or Avon and see what they say.

I have a Metzler rear tire and a 40 dollar Chinese front. I can't tell whether they don't go together or not. Just don't try any roadracing and you'll be good to go.

Thanks all.  I'll think I'll keep it simple and stick to a pair of "H's."
