I live in the Lower Hudson River Valley of NY. Once thriving communities fell to ruin as manufacturing and shipping left the River. These Towns began making a comeback in the 1980's as Artists found cheaper space than Manhattan and be less than 2 hours out of the City by Train. I took these photos last Friday. The Service Station is in Cold Spring NY and the Factories are in Beacon NY. The sign was at the end of the Street I made a U turn on.

And 754 is right about the pumps. It is amazing they are still there. There are people who scour the country looking for old gas pumps to restore. I know one of them and there is some bucks in it.

Ofreen do you live right in Boise? Got to get contact info when I go thru next year.

Been thru Boise 3 times in the last 30 days or so.. last time was Sat nite around 7:15.. gassed up at a Stinker & headed up to Riggins, freaking shirtsleeves in Boise, 61 degrees by the time I got to CaSCADE,..

....Pushed on to Riggins (warm there

), partied in the bar with the crazy Rafters..

Yeah, that was a great ride. Some 4700km in 12 days end of April beginning of May in Scotland. So you can imagine rain, wind and everything else. Just something I always wanted to do.

Today was a nice day and I decided to do a bit more exploring and shoot more pictures. The first set is Cimmeron Dude Ranch in Putnam Valley NY. I was there when I was 10 years old. It was a popular spot in the 1940's thru the 1960's. There were Rodeos there I am told. I spent a lot of Time in the Saloon drinking Redeye (Cherry Soda). It closed in 1979 and was not much more than a Bar and a boarding stables. I could not get very far into it since a State Trooper advised me the current owner was unpleasant character and would press charges. So here is what I got before I was escorted out.

I worked my way into Peekskill NY. There was a car club that ran out of this building, they had a rear area I guess they ran parties. It was either a part of the Hollowbrook Drive In Movie, which had been built on a former Golf course. This area has the dubious honor of having what may have been Americas first Race Riot. Here is an except from a newspaper report:

The veterans and others who, Rubenfeld said, "had a little too much to drink," blocked the driveway with logs and boulders, shouted " bastards" and "Jew bastards" and started down to the picnic grove, where about 300 men, women and children had already arrived.

As darkness fell, the would-be patriots and the concert-goers fought hand to hand, the fighting slowed at times by the presence of three Westchester County deputy sheriffs. The two state troopers present remained at intersections at the fringes of the action, warning away late concert patrons. Robeson was met by friends when he arrived at the Peekskill railroad station and taken to safety.

"There was a lot of drinking. They were rowdies, and they threw a few cars over a bank," recalled Willis Jamison, who owned the grounds and walked through the melee with his father, unbelieving.

The attackers flooded onto the picnic grounds as the concert-goers formed a cordon around the women and children. It was dark and nearly 10 p.m., and one of the deputies doused the lights. Another glow appeared from a bonfire of books, sheet music, pamphlets and Jamison's chairs.

Two hours after the fighting had begun, the state police arrived.

The riot gave Peekskill instant notoriety around the nation and the world. New York Gov. Thomas Dewey asked Fanelli for a report, and Pravda, the official Soviet newspaper, called it a "lynch attempt." During the following week, signs appeared on store windows, and car bumpers in northern Westchester: "Wake Up, America, Peekskill did!"

The head of the Peekskill American Legion, Milton Flynt, said after the riot, "Our objective was to prevent the Paul Robeson concert, and I think our objective was reached."

According to that wiki link there are more ghost towns in Oregon that I care to count. Next riding season I'll get out there and check some of these out if this post is still up. GREAT idea for a post
