3 abandoned shops in Roy (New Mexico) and an old water tank somewhere else in New Mexico.
Maybe the water tank is not a water tank?, just looks a bit like it was one once.

There is a plan to "disassemble both the smelter smokestack and the attached brick structure in a controlled fashion" this month. I have no clue how they will do this without imploding it with explosives, which isn't quite the same as "disassemble"? They are going to implement dust control and air testing, but a map I saw showing the test stations were mostly south of the site where nobody lives, and not to the north where my neighbors and I live. The concern is arsenic, which is in the soil and rocks naturally, builds up in the stack from the smelting process. I may end up wearing N95 masks at home for a few days?

That's a good question, David. My dad used to say the wind blew in circles here, and one time I saw the flag at the Post Office completely wrapped around the flagpole. ;D

 We had a power station stack like that in the middle of town, a guy rigged it somehow and climbed to the top every day. He dropped the bricks inside until it got full, then dropped them into a pile outside as it got lower and lower.

The Humboldt Smelter is "dust in the wind", but thankfully not too much dust. :D Everything was staged by last Friday, and the actual work started on Tuesday morning, but was aborted after the wind changed, blowing the dust towards residences. They started again Wednesday morning before sunrise, when there was no wind. They did have a water fan system, but it couldn't reach the top of the 186 foot stack; once they had removed the upper part of the stack the water kept the dust down. By early afternoon, it was a pile of rubble. Notice the power pole in the last two pics, and the water fan to the right of it in the last pic.

Love this thread.  Haven't had a chance to go through all of it yet, and so I'm sorry if this is a bit redundant.  A buddy and I have taken a couple of trips to New Mexico touring ghost towns there. There are lots of them. These are photos from one we did in the fall of 2020.  For some reason, I couldn't lay hands on my original photos, so I lifted ones that I published in a thread detailing that trip on a goldwing forum.  The following descriptive text is also from that thread.

The highlight was Mogollon, NM.  Wish I could find my orig photos. Unusual for me to have lost them. I have some pretty good shots of abandoned homes and buildings in the town. It is slowly coming back to life as people are resurrecting some of the old houses and eclectic businesses are popping up. The American way, capitalize on the old west.

============================================================
Today we took a leisurely trip across US 60 and 260 in eastern Arizona through Globe , Pinetop/Lakeside. Elevation was 9400 feet past Mount Baldy and the temperature dropped to 58F. Trust me that felt cool after recent consistent highs still in the 90s. Aspens are blazing yellow! Stopped in Alpine, AZ for the night. Headed for Silver City, New Mexico tomorrow morning.

***

We're in Silver City. Late start today. (Don't ask). Mogollon NM was a blast. The road in was a blister. One lane, blind curves, 300 ft drop offs, pea-sized gravel in hairpin turns. Hair raising. Wait! I don't have hair. Not for the faint of heart. We stopped into the Catwalks in Glenwood, but didn't go up. Was out of water, starving and the Valk was smelling like gas.

But Mogollon was definitely worth the trip.

[Footnote] : These were my closing comments after we got back home. I mentioned one of the really great bucket list roads in eastern Arizona:

===================
Back in Phoenix, way too soon.  But, it was a nice foray into an area that really needs more time for exploration. Rest assured, I will be headed back into that region. Some incredible motorcycle roads and quite frankly some that should be on any riders bucket list.

Case in point - US HWY 191, formally part of US 666 (The infamous Devils highway). I have both ridden and driven the Tail of the Dragon through Deal's Gap. Other than good marketing, 191 from Morenci up to Alpine is much longer, just as challenging and offers spectacular scenery. In many places, there are no shoulders and no guard rails - between you and oblivion (hundreds of feet to the bottom). No novice should EVER venture here!

Have you checked out the Travelers Rest board yet? There are epic tales of road trips, some going back over 10 years. Ofreen's Interesting Roads and Destinations thread at the top will keep you busy for hours, and also have a look a Mooshie's links to her blog. ;D ;D
