Computer geeks, need a PPS opener.
« on: July 04, 2009, 12:20:54 PM »
Hi fellow forum members and obviously cumputer users, I recently bought a brand new HP computer with the horrid Vista system on it.
Apart from an operating system that sucks to the max and a thousand add-ons that I don't need, it also is missing some I do need.
The Email system stopped working after 30 days (apparently it was only a "trial" version!!) and reverted to some very basic email system that could recieve email but not send it?? what's up with that??
I mean I spent $2000 on a new out of the shop computer and it has a trial version??!! >:(
Also I lost the ability to open PPS documents which are the majority of my work documents.
Question, does anyone know of a downloadable add-on that will allow me to open PPS?
I had to change to Mozzilla as my email system which I am now comfortable with.
GGRRR at HP for doing this to their loyal customers who pay good money for only a part email system.
My old XP operating system was bullet proof...Vista sucks the big one....... >:(

$2000? Oy.

Well, sounds like you already found Thunderbird to replace Outlook.

For PowerPoint you might give Open Office a shot.

Cheers guys I don't know why I didn't think of the SOHC forum members earlier, I've been trying to download a heap of systems for weeks now and all failed.

You can also load them into Google Docs which works great especially if you are mostly interested in viewing and limited editing.  I've used it a lot for viewing powerpoint, but never for editing, so no idea how well it does that.

Cheers Glen, I might try that with some of the PPS attachments the Open Office doesn't open, most I have actually been able to access so big ups to the forum for saving my bacon. :)

Microsoft.com then search for Powerpoint Viewer. Free.

I tried that but nothing they offer is compatible with Vista, which is kinda wierd as it's their own system.
I beleive it is a marketing ploy to get you to spend more $$ on their upgrades, I mean who builds an email system that only works for 30 days, Hell I wouldn't have bought the computer if i had known that. >:(

Good try anyway. See if you can get a free downgrade to XP or an upgrade to 7 when it hits the market. I hear that both may be possible.

Hush, maybe your vista is different but in the US it comes with windows mail which is almost identical to the old outlook express. I have no idea what mail client you were trying to use. Hmmmm sounds llike an F41L error! ;D

Also, I think the free downgrade to xp has been long over. The upgrade to win7 is not going yet. I dont think so anyways. but xp is not the answer anyways it will EoL fairly soon.

My Vista came with outlook as the default email system and it worked great...for 30 days and then they removed a lot of the usefull stuff like being able to open PPS docs and the emailw ould allow you to recieve mail but not send it?
I still feel like bundling the whole lot up and sending it back, hmm was that lump of semtex looking stuff originally in that box? Oh well better send it back to HP anyway they may need it for their next inovative flop.

I wonder if your country has some sort of anti trust thing against microsoft. It is happening in EU where ms is not putting IE in windows sold there. The EU made this huge hoopla about ms bungling ie with windows. So ms decided to not out anything on. Is it a bit vindictive? Maybe but if ms is to be expected to put other browsers on, then so should any other os sold there, ie mac and various flavors of linux such as red hat.
