New custom four-into-two exhaust
« on: July 05, 2009, 05:00:56 PM »
Well here's what I spent the better part of the weekend working on. I cut up the four-into-two-side-exit exhaust the bike came with, combined it with some 45 degree 2.5" pieces, baffles, fiberglass packing, and chrome tips. I have the left side wrapped and drying, I'll wrap the right side sometime this week. Here it is:

And wrapped:

Sorry for the video quality. I was fiddling with my export settings and did something wrong...

Don't mind the smoke, the new fiberglass smokes for a little bit.

Cool . Did you  adjust the cam chain yet? Sounds a little rattley to me.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Not yet, but it's on the to-do list. A quick plug check showed 2 and 3 were perfect, 1 was very lean and four was very rich. I have my exhaust, pods, and 110 mains installed, everything else is stock.

That's an interesting setup. I've thought about wrapping my pipes too but now I'm going in a different direction. What happens when you ride in the rain with those? Are there caps or something on there?

Well, I wetted the wrap before putting it on the pipes to make it stretch better. I ran the bike a bit and the heat made the water steam off. I'd assume the same thing would happen in the rain, but this bike isn't going to be a daily rider, so the chance of it ever seeing rain is very slim.

I'm not sure what "caps" you're referring to, I don't have anything like that on the exhaust.

I think she means water going down the pipes as the outlet faces upwards.

Ah, gotcha. Now that you mention it, I guess I might have to be careful about it getting caught parked in the rain. If the bike is running, there's no way for liquid to get into the engine - even if it could overcome the pressure inside the exhaust, it'd be vaporized by the hot exhaust gas. But if the bike was just parked in the rain, it'd be just like a rain gauge. Luckily this isn't my DD.

In all of Honda's stock pipes, they have a 3mm (1/8" is close) hole at the low points of pipe bends and arcs on these bikes, to let the trapped water drain out and reduce rust tendencies. Lucky us: the later bikes with catalytic convertors aren't allowed to do this.  ;)

Maybe a couple of carefully placed holes, and a tiny, short tube pushed through the wrap (if it's in the way?) would accomplish this and save all that nice plumbing work for the future!

I like the way it still lets you alternately install some rear pegs. Whether for a passenger or a rearset, it is a nice feature. Those pipes ought to work out well on that bike!

Looks good man.

I wasn't too sure about it at first but after you wrapped them I saw what you were doing.

I love it!

There's a limit to what I can do without a welder, air compressor, or other common tools that everyone should have. All of this was done with a drill, a jigsaw, and a dremel.
