CB350f leaking fuel
« on: August 07, 2009, 05:38:07 PM »
getting my bike ready to register. running well now.
took for a little ride when I got back I noticed that there was fuel dripping from under the engine.
looks like it is coming out of some sort of overflow pipe. was also dripping from the sump (not sure if that's what it is called but the bottom bit of the engine. I don't know if that is just run off from the overflow though.
definately not coming out of the fuel hose. it doesn't stop until I turn off the fuel tap. why is it doing this?

Sounds like fuel is leaking from the overflow lines coming out of the bottom of the carbs. Probably a stuck float or floats not adjusted correctly. One thing you might try is tapping on the bottom of the float bowls with a screwdriver handle or box wrench. If its a stuck float this might free it. Also, you might try taking the bike out for a ride and really running the you know what out of it in a straight line. I have had this problem before and that did cure it.

Next real option is to remove the carbs and clean them. That will fix it.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Bender01 is right, you need to pull the carbs and clean them real good. Download the manual from the top of the forum. It will help you a lot when you tear your carbs apart and reassemble. Good Luck

A float valve (or a few) might be NFG, or you might have a bit of dirt lodged in one. To flush dirt out, either ride with the petcock OFF until you run out of gas or drain the bowls manually (drain screws on bottom of bowls). Then open the petcock, the valves will be fully open and the fuel flow should wash away any clump of gunge.
Draining the bowls also gets any water/dirt/whatever out of them, but you waste some fuel. You can make a little trough out of tinfoil to take the fuel out to a jar or can: the fuel does not come out the overflow nipples (and tubing if you have that) it just leaks out around the screw once loosened. Letting the gas just pour onto the motor invites a serious fire, and the dripping gas will dissolve any tarmac under the bike anyway.
