Rear shock rebuild question
« on: July 06, 2009, 04:45:40 PM »
I picked up these shocks at a swap meet, they are from a CB900.  I know they fit because the guy had to take them off of a 74 CB750 in order to sell them to me.

Thanks to the almighty search function I was able to determine the best way to remove the spring was with two stainless steel hose clamps tighten down on each side.  Thanks to whoever thought that one up. Pure genius and simple.

So the question is, since I have never taken rear shocks apart, when I push down on the shaft there is some resistence from the oil but is it normal for the shaft to stay down after you release it?   As in this pic.

I don't want to spend numerous hours refurbishing these if they are blown.

Yup, the spring provides the only force for extending the shocks, and since you've removed those.....

The test for the shock body at this point is to push and pull on the rod.  You should have more resistance when extending the shock then when compressing it.

Yes, there is more resistence pulling up and no signs of any oil leakage.

Thanks

Thanks Guys

Several hours later the shock turned out ok. ;D

One more little project off the very long list of things to do.

I have those same shocks, and I love them, you can ride em soft or stiff, mine make a squirting sound but they don't leak or perform badly

what's up with the mounts on the bottom?

everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

I picked up the swingarm up at a swap meet, I thought I would try it out.

It has two positions for the lower shock mount either standard or further back so the shock is more laid out.  The swingarm is not extended as in allowing the wheel to be positioned more to the rear it just provides a shock mount option that is 5 1/2 inches further back.

I'm not getting rid of my stocker as I had just finished rebuilding it.  This just gives me another option to try.

No build thread yet, I'm waiting til I am further along then I'll start one.

So far I've only got:
-both wheels done
-front forks
-frame painted
- body work back from the painter
-oil tank and lines refurbished
-stock exhaust err...  modified
