How bad is too bad?
« on: July 04, 2009, 06:16:10 PM »
Riding home on tuesday a 3500 chevy pulled out in front of me from a bar.
This was the results:

The frame Is tweaked I think cause the airbox poped outta the carbs and i see a slight bend in the frame.

Only damage to the engine is the stator cover. Leaked all the oil out.

Really love riding this bike & want to continue my cb750 days. I'm either planning on rebuilding it or buying a new frame & swap most of my goodies over to a straight frame...

So i'm asking you guys on here what would you do? Save the bike that you love or get a new one & make a transplant?

Ah #$%*, glad yer here to tell us about your accident.

Front end looks pretty bad, and I'd be willing ot bet the frame is bent.

Best bet, in my opinion, is to find a 'donor' bike with frame and front end in tact.

You can sort out the rest as you go.
No.

Dang, that sucks. Glad you're okay. I agree with Mlinder about finding another donor bike.

Good luck man.

I'll agree with the transplant to another frame idea.  Make sure the bastard that pulled out in front of you pays dearly!  Find a lawyer who rides.

Glad to hear you're still with us too, it's been a bad year for accidents.  Any injuries?

Its a good thing to be asking...........I would get the cash for a totaled bike. If the driver had been drinking, get him for more!!! Then start again and use what you need from your parts stash.  This may be a silly question, but...........the last two crashed bikes talked about on this forum have been the Flat-Black variety....... maybe bright paint and shiney chrome would help.

Yeah I got some rash through the demin, trashed my favorite denim jacket. Talking with the insurance company will see how that goes.

I cant prove that he was drinking too much as he passed a field test. Nice guy just didn't see me.
So should I get a lawyer or just deal with the insurance company?
As said i think it was toast just didn't know better.

If all the oil leaked out of the alternator cover (and there shouldn't be oil in there by rights) then I'd say the cases are probably cracked too.
Something you won't know until the motor is torn down a bit.
Glad you came out better than your bike mate.....happy 4th of July. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Oil in the 750 alternator cover is normal.  There have been whole threads about this particular topic.

Crankcases are likely OK.

Seen worse.
Frame probably ISN'T bent but steering stop probably is
Needs forks, wheel, generator cover, fuel tank and 'ancillary components' (anything else you can think of to make it 'better'

If you want it written off  and scrapped, go for bent frame/frame damaged then buy it back from insurance company, if they let you.
BTW, retards, chrome, yellow/orange paint doesn't help.
Bad drivers are bad drivers, live or die with it, just treat everyone else on the road as though they are trying to kill you and, you may survive
The alternator cover does have oil in it, lubricates starter mechanism from what I remember

I'd say that is now a parts bike. I'm sure the insurance company will be glad to buy you a nice 750 once you find one.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Yeah looked it over again. The frames bent as the side cover doesn't fit on there, and the carbs dont line up with the airbox.

It depends on how the insurance co talks to you.... if they start to give you any problems...threaten the lawyer. You might want to investigate a few just in case.... I spent 6 weeks trying to reason with my insurance co....other party at fault and my  co would surrogate to the other......but they would not see my point of view so I just signed the papers with the lawyer last week. Problem with this is that it will probably take a long long time to come to a settlement and lawyer takes a big cut of it....so......try to do without.

If you're not hurt physically, you will more than likely have a hard time finding a lawyer to take the case. Personal injury lawyers have to sue for some kind of damages: pain and suffering, time off from work etc. etc.

Your insurance company should compensate you for the bike as a total loss. The cool part of this is that once they declare your bike a total loss, they will have a salvage company auction it off and give you a chance to buy it back. I ended up getting a check from progressive for 2k (what I insured my bike for) and then bought my bike from the salvage company for $50!!

Well, ya see that is what they are trying to do to me..... A salvage title really cuts the value of the bike if you ever want to sell it later. That is unacceptable for my magna which only had minor damage to frame.

so.... not sure if lawyer will take your case or not....you would have to ask....

Sorry to hear about your bike, man. Good job it's just the bike and not you, though.

+1 on being interested in the fact that the last 2 wrecked bikes on here (and, come to think of it, many wrecked bikes) are black or flat black. Anecdotal, for sure, but it's compelling enough to make me want to see the data. Let's say black wrecked bikes over total wrecked bikes in proportion to other colors of wrecked bikes over total wrecked bikes. I figure a sample size of 10,000 or so ought to cover it. Does anyone know where to start?

I believe in chrome, bright colors and loud pipes, but that's more theology than science so far.

While I'm in here... Can I buy that airbox?
