Any Questions while I'm in Japan?
« on: July 06, 2009, 06:34:23 AM »
Okay folks..

I'm here in the Osaka-Kyoto area of Japan right now (my wife's family lives here)..and will be here for another couple of weeks.

Plan to go to the Kanto-Tokyo area later this week. [That's by Shizuoka area..home of Honda for those not familiar].

I'm seeing a lot of scooters here this trip (first in 5 years)..that are replacing the  Honda cubs..and "detensha"/bicycles. Less of the larger displacement bikes..over 600 cc. In fact..I haven't seen a single bike over 750 cc since I've been here for the past 2-1/2 weeks!

However..there are lots of naked bike..70's and 80's knock-offs here..and they're not really old bikes!

While I'm still here..I thought I'd ask if there are any SOHC 4 members that have particular interests and/or pics that they might be interested in seeing?

P.S. can't promise anything..as my wife and family stuff take precedence.  But I'll try.

I think this is the Honda Japan lineup, a lot different than the USA lineup. Sorry, I have a little problem reading the text. Lotsa good rides here including CB750:

Probably could sell a few here and finance your trip Ichiban.

If there are any WWII memorials within your camera range, I'd like to see them.  I believe there's a statue of a young lady and her baby somewhere in Tokyo.  The story goes that she and her baby jumped in the river during the fire bombing.  If you happen to stroll by anything like that, I'd really like to see it.  Thank you.

Pictures would be nice....of anything actually.

I wouldn't mind some pics of those knock-offs you've been seeing.

Well Folks..

I'm back from Japan. Of all the friggin luck..I left the camera in the seat of the plane I was taking back from Japan to San Francisco (was zoned-out from a cold, fatigue, cold medicine).  Had a bunch of pics from Japan in it (digital).  Semi-freaked after I got back to Colorado..called United in S.F. and Chicago (home office)..also left Emails and phone messages to their lost and found..etc.

I hope that all the input/reports help increase chances of retrieving the camera w/pics intact.  But I'm skeptical about actually getting it returned (thinking that one of the cabin cleaners..finding a $400.00 camera..will have probably already pocketed it).  Maybe luck..and whatever good karma I may have accumulated..will help in it's return.  Me and my wife are sick about it..but I keep telling myself that I need to let go of emotional attachment to it.

Anyway..IF it's returned..I took some pics @ Yamiya in Nagoya (have a story to tell about the experience..later).  Interesting place..but much smaller that originally envisioned.  Good news is..I found that there are several small outfits in that general Nagoya-Kanto area..that specialize in working on/restoring ONLY SOHC 4 bikes!

I must be showing my age though.  This time I really felt the heat and humidity of summer there..90 degrees-90% humidity (glad to get back to @ least the dry heat of Colorado).  But having either a perennial cold or diarrhea this time on top of that..didn't seem to help my disposition much.

Anyhow..it's late for me (still trying to get readjusted to the jet lag..18 hours difference)..so I'll can it for now.  I'll get back with more info on my Japan trip, et al..later.

Interesting thread and nice pics...so with temps in the 90's with 90% humidity those police are wearing those white cycle suits.  How do they not die of heat illness?

Cliff I came across your sons sight a while ago - some great photos.

Ichi - where are the other SOHC places in Nagoya? I saw 2 CB750s this weekend!!! One on Friday night in Sakae -white with silver stripe - K0 - a Yamiya bike for sure. The other was at the traffic lights - turquoise - driven by a young guy with his girl on the back....very cool. You should have let me know you were coming to Nagoya - id have met you at Yamiya...oh well.

Some pics from the Nagoya fireworks festival last night...lots of young girls wear kimonos....

On train going there...

end of night...

cheers

This is just an update..for you guys that wished me well in getting my camera back from United..with the pics of Japan in it..

It's been over two months now since the incident.and no further word from United.  They did Email me a couple of weeks afterwards..suggesting that they didn't expect to find the camera. I guess that will be the end of it..

As far as my pics of Yamiya..they are gone too I'm afraid.  Think I explained my experience there in my previous posts here.  Wasn't there long enough to give much more info.  Thankfully I'm over all the dysentery and other health issues I was having there! [Gotta figure a better way to get around Japan in future..without picking up some bug of some sort most of the time..]
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

So Andy: I'd love to see more of your pics from Japan..maybe on a fresh "Japan" thread sometime.

Thanks for the interest guys..

I have been reading a blog from a JET programme teacher that really sheds some surprising light on japan! At this point in time, I am inclined to say that the japanese are messed up! :D
