the lingo
« on: November 15, 2005, 12:16:36 PM »
Its great reading all your posts and all the different terms for different parts etc.
what gets right up my nose is that, sadly,my harley owning mates over here (scotland,uk) have unforgivingly started calling
their gearboxes TRANSMISSIONS and their mudgaurds FENDERS.Okay,I ken the bike is 100% US,EH! (dont mention jap forks)
but its bloody awful.I heard one saying the other day when he spotted another harley owner boarding the ferry."nice ride you,ve
got there mate"  aarrrrggghhh. All I ask is,please leave other peoples lingo to their own.

cheers A harley/laverda/bmw/ural and the great 550 Sohc (3) bampot              scotland ye ken

Mudguards=Fenders..... Steve, can you add this to the "Divided by a common language" FAQ?

I absolutely refuse to spell differently for these US guys.

However, seeing as we are outnumbered here (about 5:1), we have to make some concessions to understanding. I started a thread in the Gallery after many quaestions "what's the best tire?". I named it "Tire Gallery".  Sorry.

Just remember. There are 3 global moderators on this board - one in the US and two in Europe.   8)

Oh God. Have I missed "Fenders"... :o

Steve, is this one correct: Cushions=Shocks?

I don't think that one's in there either....

I must now repeat my Mantra.... Damn Haynes manual... ;D

I thought that shock absorbers were sort of international...

Cushions is what you sit on while watching TV.

Well, I'm just going off of the Honda Parts books.. I think DSS also lists them as "rear cushions"... ???

You’re right ........a mudguard is just that, even on a UK/Scotish Harley ;)

I hear mudguard and think of the rubber flap that hangs down behind the tire. :-X

Please educate this poor illiterate American.

Is it...

"I twisted up me fingers whilst nicking up me nuts with her spanner."

or is it

"I spanned up her knickers with me fingers on her plugs."

I believe these are from the Haynes manual section on sparkplug "renewal."
I'll light up a fag and wait for your answer.

(Trivia question for us yanks- In the 1930's Cornwell tools once sold what were called "Nugget" sockets.. anyone know what they were?)

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
