timing issues &*%*!!!
« on: July 07, 2009, 01:31:47 PM »
so im now trying to fix my timing i adjusted the points clearances the 2-3 clearance was ok but the 1-4 was small (like less than .0015 the smallest feeler gauge) but after some very careful adjusting i got the clearances just right( around .014).. and now the bike wont idle  just stalls and barely runs i have rotated the timing plate ( or base) slowly in both directions and nothing is helping

Are the points new?   If you've changed the point position, reset the timing using the bulb or paper method.   This should get you back running if it's a timing issue, provided other things haven't gone out, condensers and what nots.

I think you need to start over with setting the point gap...
First turn the crankshaft until the 1+4  "T" mark is visible thru' the viewing hole, then continue to turn clockwise 90 degrees past the mark. This is where the lobe on the cam opens the points to their widest. The gap needs to be 14 thou. (.014 ) at this setting.
Repeat for 2+3 point.
Timing ( static ) is set by turning crankshaft to 1+4 'F' mark and then turning the points plate( the whole round plate ) until the 1+4 point is just opening...an ohm meter is best way to see it exactly. Tighten plate screws. Turn crankshaft to 2+3 'F' mark and adjust 2+3 sub-plate to make points just open at the 'F' mark. Done.....gap + timing...
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
