Kick start problem
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:29:31 AM »
I have a problem with my 1972 cb500.  Everytime I start it by button it goes over just fine.  But when I try to kick start it, whether in gear or not or whether I have the clutch in or not, it lurches forward when I try to kick it over.  And the wierdest thing is that before storing it for winter it worked just fine.

Hmmmm... that's a strange one.
Are you sure the starter is engaging and actually cranking the motor over?
(as opposed to just spinning)?
Are you sure it is in nuetral?
It sounds like your clutch pack is stuck together, not uncommon after sitting.
Let us know.

I know the starter is cranking the motor over because it starts the engine up just fine.
I'm also sure its in nuetral and when I start it with my starter I can drive it around the block.

Usually this problem wouldn't bother me but kick starting a bike just looks so much more bas a$$ than using the button all the time.

Another thing about the kick start is that sometimes it wont engage or anything.  You try kicking it and there is no resistance what so ever.

I've worked on bikes before but nothing older than a 1990 XR200 so I'm not hip with this older technologies but I'm trying to be.
