Honda Keys mystery unveiled??
« on: November 15, 2005, 01:49:02 PM »
After the lasts posts regarding the keys I've been thinking about it. I've had a look at my key and it seems it have only three "valleys", that means three pins on the lock. The three "valleys" my key have are all different lenght, being them deep, half deep and shallow.

That means that if you would only have three different pin lenghts and three "valleys", the possible combinations would be 27. But if Honda used in each lock one pin of each lenght, in different positions, the combinations would be just six. The advantage is that, if you loose your key and can't find the same, you can just get another one, open the lock and position the pins in the right place.

Could you please check your keys gentlemen? Mine is the "T" shape, It's just a matter of checking if the three "valleys" are of different depth.

just checked, 3 pin.  Seems like alot of companies did keys like this.  I had a left over key from a 78 F'liner that fit the 82 F'liner I drove.  less paper work to keep track of I guess.

Yup, I can confirm that there are only 3 "tumblers" in my CB550 seat lock. I took it apart to rekey it to match my new ignition lock and there were only 3 sets of pins in there.

Actually there is great variability that can be achieved by using a large combination of different height pins in the lock even there are only three of them. However for the sake of simplicity and economy I understand that there maybe only a few "different" locks.
