Genuine Honda Gasket Kit
« on: November 17, 2005, 10:33:51 AM »
Are these availale anywhere? I know honda doesn't have one for my '78 750F and i'm not seeing them at any of the usual suspect aftermarket places.

The mechanic who's helping with this bike told me the aftermarket kits are much more of a gamble than the honda kit and have been known to leak (especially the head gasket).

Lemme know if there's somewhere to get hold of these things and if not - which aftermarket kit to go with.  I searched through the forums but it seems almost 50/50 split between athena is great and athena sucks. and again about 50/50 between whether one should use athena or vesrah.

any help would be appreciated.

i don't see a fulll kit on DSS - and the head gasket costs as much as an entire aftermarket kit.

some of the other gaskets are more cost competitive... not sure it's worth that much coin.  i guess if it doesn't leak it was worth it - but i have no real way of knowing if it's going to leak if i use a cheaper aftermarket gasket.

edit: now that i double-check, DSS doesn't even list a head gasket for the F2. back to the discussion on athena vs. vesrah, i suppose... or a possible source for F2 gaskets from honda.

super

buy the kit, then buy the head gasket.  I bought the kit, blew the gasket under 100 miles on it, had to buy the Honda head gasket. Its worth the money.

i assume the kit shown on this page is of no use to me?

http://www.cmsnl.com/specials.php?specialmodel=CB750%7C%7C%7C&category_id=12&shop_parts_partPage=10

i'm not in a hurry, since this weekend i'm getting exhaust valve guides pressed in and i'd like to redo the paint on the engine while it's apart.

i do need to do my homework on this and decide which way to go, though - so that this doesn't end up holding me back in near future.

I have an aftermarket gasket set for my CB350twin, and even when the head gasket is there, I think I will err on the safe side and buy the OEM honda. The whole set costed me about 25 bucks + shipping. If i'm not wrong, the head gasket is the only one exposed to high compression and temperature, so it is important that it is made of the best quality. The othere ones simply have to keep the oil inside, so I guess it's not that of a problem. Also, except the cylinder gasket, almost the rest of them (at least in the twin) can be replaced with the engine on the bike, so if they fail I can always replace them later for a OEM gasket.

Try www.westernhillshonda.com you may be lucky and the shipping should be cheaper. Aftermarket kit with genuine head gasket ought to be  ok
