Any tips on getting spark plug #2 out? (750 K7)
« on: July 08, 2009, 09:38:50 PM »
I know getting spark plug #2 out is legendarily difficult, but the trouble I am having seems too crazy! I can get my ratchet with an 18mm socket into there, but it seems as though the socket is too big for the plug in there! All 3 other plugs were the standard NGK plugs and came out easily enough with the 18mm. Is it possible that the PO had some other type of plug in there with a different hex size? I tried both of the spark plug ratchet attachments I had (in addition to the 18mm): the 13/16 and the 5/8th!
What's going on???

Use the Honda tool kit box spanner, Most, if not all, sockets are too big round the outside

I have had no problem using a Craftsman 18mm spark plug socket.  Maybe it is a bit smaller around than their regular 18mm socket.

get a set of metric deep well sockets. Start at 18mm and work your way down until you find the one that fits.

I got the "spark plug socket" at my local Tractor Supply Company store. I think it has a little smaller outside diameter than a regular socket. It fits snug but Im able to get the plug out.

I also use the Craftsman 18mm, but I really have good luck with the socket in the Honda tool bag.  Should not be a problem unless the PO tightened it to tight or put something else in there?  Any chance the PO rounded off the plug so your 18mm can not bite it?

My Cb750F sat for 25 years and I was able to use the Honda socket to get 3 plugs out but just barely.  It was hard to get enough leverage.  For the last one I had to use the Craftsman socket wrench as well as a 2 foot long pipe and it was difficult even with this.  Luckily everything came out ok in the end but I was a little concerned at first.  The only issue I have had with the Craftman socket is the rubber insert sometimes grabs the plug so well that it pulls off the wrench and stays with the plug and on those two center ones there is not enough room to grab it and pull it off.  So you have to back the plug out to get them apart.  Now that they have been loosened I can use the Honda tool without problems.

What is the real issue?  Is the plug rounded off?  Is it a different size?  Or is it just in there really tight?

I had the same problem with my K7. I don't remember specifics but it had a different size and brand in the number 2. I think I might have had to use an SAE socket to finally get it loose.
