How do you prep a new cam chain?
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:44:25 PM »

Got a new HD Tsubaki cam chain to install. It's covered in some cosmoline substance. What should I use to clean that off?

Acetone maybe? Are you supposed to leave that on there? during reassembly I used a little crane cams lube on the whole top end rotating assembly.

I would say leaving it on.  They coat the chain with an anti-rust coating to protect it while it sits on shelves.  I would leave it on, and once hot oil get's on to the chain, it will probably take it right off.

But what the hell do I know, that last statement was just opinion.

I brushed it in a bath a denatured mineral spirits, blew it off and oiled it.
