What to do? MC advice
« on: October 11, 2009, 05:40:16 PM »
I have been riding/working on my '73 CB500 for a little over a year now and she is very reliable.  She has had lots of work done to her since I've gotten my hands on her (clutch, carbs multiple times, tank lined, ect.).  So now it's time to start working on other aspects of her, such as improved braking for instance.

My question is...

Does anyone have advice on either rebuilding my stock MC or get a more modern one?

I've already rebuilt my caliper and I will be installing a SS brake line when I decide which direction I will go.  Also I will be getting the rotor drilled sometime this winter so if anyone knows of a good place to get this done, please let me know.

Thanks

For my cafe which is just about done, I stripped and polished the original MC just because it looks so good.  I didn't want a new plastic MC.  I would imagine a modern MC would function better (how much I have no clue).  A MC rebuild kit is about $35 from Honda so spending $50-$60 on a brand new MC seems like a pretty good deal considering the increase in effectiveness.  If the appearance doenst bother you, I would go for it.  Keep in mind the brake lever will look different from your clutch lever.

I had a 73 500 and rebuilt the MC. Personally I like the looks of these old circular MC's and the fact they are aluminum. Rebuilding them isn't too bad, the worst part is getting the circlip out, which if you look in the tech section there are a couple suggestions on how to do it. when I rebuilt mine I took an aluminum rod, drilled a hole in one end length wise just bigger than a brass brush dremel bit, some jb weld and stuck it in a drill. It was long enough to reach into the MC piston area, and my fork bottoms  ;D

I'm sure a more modern brake MC would improve stopping power, as well as doing dual rotors up front. However I found the stock system stopped me just fine.

This is the MC I was thinking of.  It looks like a few others on this site have used it with good results.
