I would check what parts will swap from an XS650.  Easy to get and readily available.  I was surprised to see the rear disc.  The XS650 did not get that till 78.

Actually superbike bars are gonna go on there lol...I just had the clubmans laying around for my never to be finished cb750 lol. Anything is better than the goofy stock ones though.

Just stumbled across this interesting article! I have owned 4qty  1978 XS500's. Bought one brand new when I was in high school.Put 18,000+ miles on it,roadraced it,dragraced it,toured ,etc. Sold it to a friend and missed it so much I bought another one,sold that one and bought two more .I must be in a time warp! Thanks for the vote of confidence...or I got a TS400 for free and it has a non-leaking very well running motor that will easily fit in the XS500 frame...plus it's a two stroke!

My time doesn't cost money...I have very little money into this project at all actually. Just havn't had much time recently to work on it, trying to get my truck done, and my cb750 done first now that winter is upon us.

Ok so i NEED to find an oil filter for the XS500 motor, change of plans. This bike is getting put back together with fresh paint/gaskets/tires etc and being sold to a friend of mine that wants a cheap fun bike.

I can't seem to find an oil filter anywhere that fits...it's a spin on filter. I even tried going through the filter book at NAPA and nothing is quite right.

I seem to remember that when they were a current bike only Yamaha did the filters

I just checked the Fram catalog for you (http://www.fram.com/pdf/Motorcycle.pdf), and they don't even list your bike. However, every Yamaha listed that uses a spin-on uses the Fram PH6017A. And there was apparently a factory adapter kit (updated part #99999-02689-00) that allowed you to use the same filter the other Yammies use. NW Vintage Cycle claims to have 2 in stock @$65. But I'd make sure it's the adapter kit w/filter they're selling, and not just the filter.

Stumbled into it on a translated page from a German website.

This is an overview of oil filters for the XS 500, come with the adapter kit (99999-02290) are used. This information is intended for your information, a guarantee of course I can not accept.The basis for this collection is one of the print on the filter that is included with the adapter kit and a very good overview of the company MANN + HUMMEL is the only ones able to provide a useful comparison table on the web. At least the only one that was easy to find.

I ordered the adapter regardless, even if it doesn't include a filter I can get a filter for any other yamaha no problem that'll fit that. Original XS500 oil filters go on ebay for as much as this adapter sometimes heh.

Actually, I was concerned that it might be the filter without the adapter. The translated German indicates the part number is for the adapter, but I could be misreading it. That's why I suggested you might want to call NW Vintage to confirm that the adapter is included. You'd be really disappointed if a $65 oil filter arrived by itself.
