Stripped oil filter bolt
« on: July 10, 2009, 07:56:01 PM »
Can someone give me some ideas on how to get this god damn bolt off?!  Did a quick search and couldn't find anything, but I gotta assume I'm not the only one whose done this.  I tried and tried to loosen the bolt, even spayed it with liquid wrench beforehand and NOTHING.  I actually broke two sockets trying to get it loose before turning to a wrench which eventually stripped it.  >:(

You might goto Sears and get a good impact driver and see if that will work. Just a thought. Other wise if you have a local garage to take it to they can get it off (might be a charge for it tho).

Yea, you could get a grinding stone or a cutter however you would need to take care not to damage the case around the bolt and it would take some time but yea it could be done.

Any one have a better idea for this one? I am probably not the best one for advice on this.

You can figure on needing a new bolt.  It also has the pressure relief valve inside, so they're not exactly cheap.  Your local dealer can order one from Honda or get an aftermarket one - made by Emgo, I think.  Any dealer that works with Parts Unlimited or Marshall's, among others, should be able to get it for you in a few days.  Of course, there's always Ebay or the various online suppliers, too.

Now, to get the old one off.  File the flats flat again, try some big vice grips, remember righty tighty, lefty loosey!  I've filed them down to 15 mm before and used a 6 point socket, too.

Not trying to preach, but quality tools with a lifetime warranty are a lifetime investment!

Good luck!

Mine is a little round nub.  Bought a replacement bolt, just haven't had time to get around to it.  Honda dealer wanted 60 bucks for it, got one at my usual shop for 12.  Emgo.

My prefered approach, whizzer wheel bolt head down til next smaller avail. 6 point socket can be DRIVEN  onto bolt head. start & warm bike. fetch socket a couple smart raps and attempt to remove w/ cheater bar. heat and impact often help. bolt is gone any way. in worst case senarios, you can grind head completley off and remove filter cover exposing bolt body. unfortunatley usually this also messes up filter housing. luck G

I grinded mine off as well.  Cost me a filter housing but I did it.  One of my 350Fs has that humongous nut on it...

If the pic. is your actual filter bolt, it's not so bad....I would put a NEW vise-grips, just as tight as you can pull the handles together and give it one whack of a hammer...I'd be very surprised  if no-go......

I went to the hardware store and bought a big allen head bolt. I welded it to the striped bolt and had to use the allen wrench with a prybar to get it to move, but i won. and all i had to do was buy a new filter bolt. I have seen people destroy the housing. I can post pics tomorrow but im now going to bed.

Before you even start go buy the new filter bolt. The most I've seen them go for is 15 bucks.
Next locate the largest screw extracter you can find. Drill the appropriate size hole in the bolt head and use the extractor to screw it out.
Don't go beating on it with a hammer. The threads inside the cases could get messed up and then you're really in trouble.

Yes you can grind the head of, with out damaging the housing. The bolt is sealed by o-ring on the inside of the housing, so if you nick the surface a little it's ok. You can also weld something to it, beat on it with hammer and chisel, heat it with a torch and do all sort of mean and evil things to it seemingly without ill effects to the treats in the crankcase.

this thread reminds me of the first time I took off that bolt. I made sure I had a good grip on it and it screamed while i was taking it out. I thought the head was going to come off. I'm glad I didnt have problems.

Considering that bolt hadn't been touched for over 15 years on my bike (I just bought it last month), I guess I got off "half lucky".

whenever i sell a bike. I always crank down the bolt as hard as I can before i sell it. So that every new bike owner gets to go through this. Its a right of passage. And it gives people a reason to MF the PO. ;D

Years ago I bought a dodge van, that had a special lug nut on each wheel, so thieves couldn't take those groovy chrome rims, and fat white letter tires 8). (I miss that van :(), anyway, the adapter didn't come with the van ???. When it came time to put new tires on, I thought the mechanic was gonna throw his impact wrench at me, but he just grinned, and got out his air chisel, put it on the funky nut at about the 2 o'clock position, and BZZZZZZed it right off ;D....Sooo, when I discovered ffjmoore's R.O.P. on my K2, I just grinned, and got out my air chisel....

I have used the weld on a nut process many times on several different projects, sometimes even welding on a washer will do the job with a broken bolt. ;D
