Ant Hill Removal Ideas?
« on: July 11, 2009, 06:01:46 AM »
Anyone have any tried and true methods for removing ant hills from an otherwise nice lawn.
I've heard of boiling water.....and tried that ant goop....but that didn't seem to work well.

Just wondered if there is a trick I don't know about.

Thanks

Steve

Don't know about the frozen north, but down here we have problems with fire ants. There are lots of commercial baits. (Amdro, spctracide, bengal) Sprinkle it on the mound, the workers carry it to feed the queen and a few days later the mound is dead.

we used to dig the hole out a bit, then shove a hose down there, and let it run for a day or so. Flood em out.
No.

I don't know how to get rid of them, but I have noticed a lot more of them here in Ontario...near Alliston.

I cut alot of firewood and I've noticed that the carpenter ants have become more aggresive in attacking not so dead trees. I've even found them in Cedar and Black Cheery...trees which they normally don't want anything to do with in my experience.

I've also noticed many red ant and small black ant mounds on the lawns around my parents farm, which I've never seen before this year.

I'm guessing you're seeing the same increase Swoop?

I've been using Scotts Ant-B-Gone with success on Carpenter ants in the wood pile, but haven't tried it on the lawns yet.

You can pour Diazinon or other pesticide liquid directly in the hole. Or you can use Kerosene/Gasoline the same way. They make complex tunnels underground so you really need to flood it.

I was going to suggest Diazinon, too, but is it still available to the general public?  I thought it had been restricted to professionals only.  The kind I used to use was in granule form, and we would sprinkle it in a circle around the ant hill.

This worked, but I don't advise it. My buddy poured some gas down the hole, we stood back a ways and then he through a match. Three of us just about got knocked off our feet :o

Who knew they had little tunnels all over the yard ::)

It took us a while to put out all the fires ;D

we have a fireant problem here in the southeast. i use the crystalized ant bait. spread it ON the hill and alot of the brands out there recomend you water it in after. i also put a bag of the stuff in a broadcast spreader at the beginning of warm weather and cover the lawn.  if you dont care about pouring toxic chemicals into the ground, diesel works great.

Depending on how many ant hills you have and the size. I'm guessing 1 foot across. Gas is your instant cure. About a cup will do. However don't light it up, the fumes is (are?) what does the trick. No grass for 2 years unless you dig up the spot and transplant. I have also had luck with those liquid ant killers (borax and sugar) but you need to drip it on something solid so it does not sink into the ground and you need  a few days of no rain. By the way for all you tree huggers... the gas idea was suggested by the Ministry of Natural Resources... About 20 years ago... Just my 2 cents

There is a very effective old school treament that works. Get a plug of chewing tobacco or a cheap cigar and soak in in a small bottle of water for a couple of days. Pour the liquid into the hole(s). The Nicotine is a contact poison which will not harm your grass and is eco friendly.
