Yep. Think I'll go to the end of the day and whatever's left hits the toilet. There's no having 4 unsmoked cigs in the house for me.

Going to try coupling this up with some physical exercise. Never tried that before and I noticed (last time) when I'd head out to buy a single I was almost over the craving by the time I walked out to the store and back so it'll probably help.

Don't know what the co-workers are going to think of spontaneous jumping jacks but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

You have a tobacco store that sells singles too?  Those things are evil.  I've made it 5 weeks now (and by this point the thought of having a smoke doesn't even cross my mind), but in the beginning it was terrible knowing that I could walk up there and get just one.  But I knew that "just one" turns into two, two turns into five, five turns into a pack, and then I'm back where I started.

Hey I applaud anyone who gives up or attempts to give up smoking, it's more addictive (according to international medical opinion) than Heroin.
I was a two pack of 25's a day, I only gave up because at 28 I was too old to return to Karate full time and smoke, one of them had to go and as my kids were into Karate big time I wanted to help them in their training.
24 years later and I'm still smoke free (free Hell it costs $13.50 a packet here, it was $10 a brick of ten when I gave up, I couldn't afford to smoke again ;D).
So big ups to anyone who can beat the habit, it's hard, very hard....I compare it to burrying my sister when she was only 34, that's how hard I rate it.
At the end of the day you will only give up if you want to and if you have enough reason to.
I found cold turkey was the only way to go, I think I was unlivable with for at least a month. :D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Buy the ticket, take the ride.

I can see the morning coffee/smoke ritual will have to be modified. I'll miss you morning coffee.

Hey Terry,

Yeah, I'm already down to 6 or so a day. I'm not just quitting smoking when this  pack is gone, though. Monday, I'm quitting drinking, too. That's also the day I'm starting to go to the pool and swimming a couple hours, and am buying a bicycle in a couple weeks to do my commute to work, about 4 miles each way.
I've just, you know, had enough of this lifestyle. My body can't take it anymore, I'm not young, and parts of me are pretty well #$%*ed-up from the accident, and I'm not as resilliant as I used to be.
I don't think I'll have too big of a problem with the quitting smoking bit. I abviously didn't smoke while I was inm the hospital for over 2 months, and didn't get a pack of smokes until about 2 or 3 months after I got out of the hospital, so really, I've only been smoking again for about 6 months or so.
Time to get as healthy as I can, because at this age, in my condition, it's all going to go downhill if I treat myself like I did in my late 20's and early 30's.
No.

Fail. I now have the cell-phone set to 3 hour intervals so I can regulate. I'll try just moving the intervals farther apart until it's ridiculous and I'm done.

Pretty sure I hate this.

Quitting sucks bad enough to be the prime motivator to keep me from starting again.

There was a time when 4 packs a day was not uncommon for me.

I've quit so many times I've lost count, this time I think I have 6 years, maybe more now.

And the urges still come, no where near as frequent, and smokers stink, they smell bad now, that also helps.

I've learned that I can not have a cigar, that take me back, and chew - no more of that either.

Coffee, I drink it still, but no more tobacco products of any kind -

It was worth quitting, hang in there, it does get better then it gets great.

17 years now.  Terry, you are the only person I have ever heard admit to smoking almost as much as I did.  I did 4 packs a day, and dicked around for years thinking I would quit.  Finally, just gave them up.  I agree with you, if an old fart like me can give em up, anyone can.

24 hours. Walked out to the store 5 times yesterday just to not buy cigarettes. It's a weird little ritual but it seems to help somehow.

I need to quit.

My kid is going to be born in about 2 weeks. I wanted to quit before he was here.

I only smoke at work, i bought a new car about a year ago, and actually managed to quit smoking in my car.  That's rough with a 40-50 minute commute.

Its weird, i am willing to smoke and put tar and #$%* in my lungs, but i look at the drugs and the gum, and the patch, and think "what will that crap do to my body, that can't be good..."

eh.

I think this weekend is my cold turkey period.  we'll see.

Go for it. In about 17 hours I'll be at 3 days which is where I've historically failed but I'm feeling strongly committed despite some serious generalized anxiety (some chest pains I'm construing into getting cancer right as I quit - I mean - that'd be kind of funny right? One way or another it's a strong motivator). Kind of glad I didn't go the Chantix route at this point as I'm clearly a nut job.

I swear, you guys that just walked away no sweat- I think you got biologically lucky.

I'm accidentally on day 5 of no smoking.
I smoked saturday, had a really bad weekend, traveled relatively hungover from st. louis to kansas city and had no desire for a cigarette.
I just realized yesterday that I hadn't had one, I think it was yesterday?
Anyway, I'm avoiding snacking, I'll buy some gum, but I'm doing pretty well.
i've never been a heavy smoker, I don't know if I'm ready to quit, or if it will last, but we'll see.

If you can pull off the social smoker gig (my SO can) more power to you. You're clearly both freaks of nature...  ;) Cranky now.

My SO only smokes if we're drinking or he's irritated and I'm smoking out back.
I've been smoking for like....5 years and 2 of those were not buying my own.
I just got the first craving I had for one since I "paused" smoking. I coulda bummed one off the guy next to me. Instead I went and bummed a piece of gum and took some deep breaths.
yea, I'm not #$%*y. I found I got frustrated with my server at lunch, but I mean, come on, why does it take 35 minutes to produce a cheeseburger?

I was a hardcore smoker for thirty odd years , woke up one morning just over three years ago and said no more smoking , tough for a couple of weeks but stuck to it . So if you want to quit it can be done and i wish you all good luck coz it aint easy.

7 days. Let's see, tightness in the chest- check. Anxiety (holy crap is this a heart attack?!)- check. Weird sleeping habits - check. Occasional light-headedness (WTF is that about?) - check. Overwhelming urges to smoke still in place - check. No cough yet though.

Why is it you can't go back and slap some sense into your 18 year old self?

Go Iggy, I'm rooting for you.  Just keep an eye on that money meter from the ACS and when it get's high enough, buy another bike.
I have the anxiety and dizziness even if I smoke, so I'm double screwed when I quit. Try exercising.  It will give you body the endorphin high and you can become addicted to that instead.

So, i actually did it.

I quit sunday.

I have nicorette for the "hard" cravings which are mostly after meals.

been replacing smoking with chewing regular gum, or a glass of water.

So far so good.  Kid isn't born yet, so i made my wife pretty happy too that i quit before he was born.

Score.

Good luck everyone else.
