77 750f cafe build finished
« on: July 12, 2009, 06:15:30 PM »
Here is the build process:
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=43372.0
She went from this:

to this:

Here she is today:

gas cap:

Started Nov. 08. Finished on April 28th 2009. Took it out, got hit by a car, back off the road until today brought it home.

Lots of cutting, welded, fabricating.

Paint:
Satin Black paint, 14k gold leaf solid stripe, red pinstripe.

This is my first bike, first build and did it all myself with the exception of welded the prefabbed pieces together. Great learning experience!

Thanks for looking. Andrew

Looks Good, but I am still a fan of the classic 77 CB750 Look.  I may be partial...I still have mine like your before picture 8)

I like the way that tail bolts to the frame in the back.

That right there is a thing of beauty.  What did you use to black out the engine and not worry about overheating?  Looks fantastic.

Just me.... but I would turn the fork ears over so the headlight doesn't sit so high.  Otherwise it looks great!

Why not post this on your build thread though?  Keeping it all in one place is great for looking back on all you have done and all you went through to get the bike the way you want it.  Through the initial build and through the crash....  That's what the project thread is all about....history bro.  Just sayin....

a few questions. Who built your oil tank and do they have another? Does it work ok? What jets and needle height are you running? Where did you get your tripple tree? Are your wheel Painted or Powdercoated?
Love it.

Thank you guys for the input and comments.

I am going to rework the fork ears, cut them down again and going to mount the bars below the upper tree. Agreed. Also feel the bars are too high as well. Good point.

As for not posting it together, I put it in the wrong forum to start, should have posted in the project area, not the general area. I hear you though on keeping it all together.

As for painting the engine. I painted it with Duplicolor engine enamel, low gloss black. As for overheating, hasnt yet. Fingers crossed.

FF, I made all of the pieces for the tank and had a friend weld it for me. The tank works great. With the oil in the motor, the bike holds just shy of 3qts. The tank is all aluminum. 4.5" round pipe, sealed the ends. Welded in the AN fitting bungs and used a filler neck from a VW. bought it off ebay for $25. Cost me about $100 to build it.

Remember the engine is painted originally, just silver rather than black. Since the heat comes from internal and not external sources the color is not relevant.  I don't think, maybe?

And many, many factory engines have been painted black over the years. So overheat is not an issue IMO.

that is SO cool, gives me a lot of hope for my 750F :]
I LOVE the tank decal, where on earth did you get it, I want to put one on each side of my tank.   Where did you relocate the electronics, and did you do away with the battery, or is it hidden somewhere I can't think of?  where did you get the fork boots, I want to put a set on my F as well.

Poom. Thanks for the comments. The decal I had made a local sticker shop. Brought the logo to them, scanned and had them cut it. Battery, electronics, wiring and so forth are hidden under the seat. I will take pics and post them up. Fork boots are from some ebay store. Dont like the fit, getting a new set from cycle x.

Andrew ; The bike came a long way and it should ride great on some of the back roads on the North Shore Long Island.  Will you put on some kind of a splash gard or finder in front of the rear tire ?
Maybe we could get a ride in some day. Joe

Yes, but the factory paint is very, very thin.  As you mentioned, the heat comes from internal sources - It has nothing to do with the color - thicker paint is going to insulate the engine and effect its heat dissipation ability (especially the cooling fins.)  That's why I was wondering if he had a trick up his sleeve.

Of course, looking awesome and hoping for the best is a valid option as well. ;)

That's a whole bunch of coolness right there. Great job.

Question, what shocks did you use?

bonafide I used some shocks from EBAY. no name company. They ship from france. Took a little modding to get them on. Still need to tinker with them.

Thanks for the comments on the bike. I appreciate it. Your bike is sick as well.

I'll have to check ebay, those are awesome looking shocks.  I was going to use stock ones but my springs are too rusty :[

Great looking bike! Thanks, I needed the inspiration from your after photos. I just started my build this week77 550F. I've got a huge archive of pics to look at , but was missing a black and gold bike (plan on the same colors...Purdue University colors) so thanks.

I have some of these shock and am yet to use them, can you tell me what you think of them? I see you used the 2 spring ones, mine are the single spring model from the same French guy, would love a review.

Indy glad I can help. The only real reason I decided to use gold was that my mom used to be a calligrapher and has a ton of 14k gold leaf left over. Figured I'd use it.

Retro.. As for the shock. Not to happy with them so far. There is alot of travel in the rear end. Busted a tail light lense already and keep bending the plate under. I have to play with them some more. Adjusting air pressure and messing with the collar to stiffen the spring. Positive side. Really like the way they look.

Correct me if i am wrong, but i thought they were nitrogen cartridge shocks, not air, better check first.

well decided to do more work on it since I am not allowed to ride until next season. Shoulder surgery is a real painful b!tch.
Bought -2 fork tubes and progressive springs. Had to chop 1" off the spring to make it work. Plus '80 750k lowers.
Put the clip ons below the upper triple brace.
Swapped the MC for a 93 gsxr MC. Felt it fit the style better
Cut down headlight ears.
Changed gator boots.
Will post up pics tomorrow.
