650 Trans/clutch in a 550, possible?
« on: July 13, 2009, 06:18:37 PM »
Got a cam chain on order, as well as some other bits, trying to get this thing reliable.

I'm going to replace the trans, I think I have some selector drum/fork damage. I also need to see how my clutch plates look.

For the sake of putting the newest possible parts in the bike, I'm thinking I may be able to drop in a 70-82 CB650 trans, and maybe clutch as well. Anyone done this, and are there any parts that will not interchange?

There's a guy who did a 550/650 hybrid engine.  it required a lot of work.  Do a search for that.  Also, I don't think the 650 trans was any stronger than the 550.
Now  1972 CB350FX (experimental v2.0)

Not looking for added performance, just parts that are 8 years newer. Was it paulages that did that swap?? Paul, you out there? Should I try this?

I'd prefer the 400f for the gearbox, 6 speeds would be my dream.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Is this a 'wish' or advice? If 400 guts fit I'll be all over that. 6 gears would freakin rule.

I know it works for the 350f but don't think we can get that beloved 6th gear into our 500/550/650's unfortunately. :)
One of our Kiwi forum members has a 350f top with a 400f case, works good from all accounts.

Some 650 bits will fit but not the complete thing if my memory serves
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).
