wow! how does that much $%*& get in a motor? was this motor left open and mice built a home, or was this set on the ground without the oil pan on it. Looks like metal bits in there, you may want to split the cases and inspect it

After looking at this pic I think I def. need to check out my screen, but how do I do that?  Oh yeah, I just changed the oil too.
You have to drop the oil pan and the screen is right there.

good thought - flush out the oil tank as well - that's easy to do.

Maybe a recommendation - take off the oil lines from the tank to the engine and give them a flush as well - only a 10 minute job - then you know they are clean for when you run some fresh oil..

still stunned by the amount of crap in there -

did you take any pictures of the sump as well ???

You know... that looks malicious.  Somebody was so angry, that they "fixed" the bike by dumping debris in the oil filler.

Uh oh....here's where my knowledge of "hands on" and all things detail in nature make me look like a bufoon.   Where is the sump??  I cleaned the pump pickup screen, replaced the oil filter and put it back together with a nice new gasket.  I plan on changing the oil a few times (maybe 3) at 50, 100 and 250 mile intervals, including maybe running some solvent the first or maybe the first couple times (like marvel mystery or sea foam).   Beyond that, I didn't get too crazy.  I mean, if this didn't kill it, how could 1/1000 of this end up doing damage as I go forward?

At least that's the way I'm thinking.  Am I thinking wrong?  I just got done cutting a new gasket and bolting the pan back up :-\

Old filter was dirty, but no visible chunks or particles.  This sort of indicates that all the bad stuff was limited to the screen.

As for the bike itself....it's nice.  You'd never guess.

blackmax,
the sump is what you took off to get to your oil filter screen - that thing you just made a gasket for..
did it have a lot of sediment in it as well ??

I hope you gave it a good cleanout anyway before you bolted it back on..

If anything is heavier than the oil - it will usually settle to the bottom of the pan - namely bits of white glittery metal means it could be your bike guts fallling  to pieces - or bits of steel, or bits of clutch fibres..

I'm sure you would have looked at the sump pan before you put it back together ??

 :)

If you have stock pipes you should be able to get the pan off without removing them.  That is the case on my KO & K1.  Yours should be about the same.

Being a sick and twisted sort of guy... I want to see more pics.

lets see the inside of the sump pan and what came out of the bottom of the oil tank.

There has got to be a ton of stuff in there.

Truely amazing.

+1 on flushing out the oil tank and lines seperately, maybe chase out the lines with a soft wooden dowel too as something may be lodged in there blocking oil flow too.

I remember seeing a locking oil cap somewhere on the web...anyone?

Some good detergent oil like rotella might carry any residual crud to the filter or the pump screen so you can clean it out later... just a thought.

Or maybe you'd be better off running a very high quality oil filter, the kind that gets clogged within a thousand miles...

Man, that pix looks like someone hurled in the engine. Makes me feel like it, now, too.  :P

All that silicone seal makes me nervous: if a PO sealed the crankcases with that much of it, I would be concerned that the oil passages at the alternator end and the points end of the crankshaft may be blocked from too much of that stuff. Those passages are small and the sealant, if there is too much, can ooze into the passages when reassembling. Just a thought.

Crankcases should never be sealed with silicone sealant: it should always be the latex-based stuff that you can get at most bike shops. The latex stuff, if a bit of it gets into those oil passages, will dissolve and ooze through the bearings and out into the crankcase, pass back through the pump and get trapped in the filter (or tank) later, with little or no damage anywhere. Silicone will just block the passages...  :-\

Oh, duh. sump=pan.    Yea, it had a reasonable amount of gunk, but not many chunks, mostly the usual sludge.  Yes, I cleaned it up.    I did not remove the pump itself.....maybe silly considering I was already there, but oh well.  I'm fairly comfortable that the insides will be sparkling after a few oil changes (50,100 and 250).

To finish this up....I put everything back together  (with a few snags of course).  It runs fine, sounds good and the oil is recirculating into the tank.  I see no leaks yet; but, I am keeping a close eye on the oil filter housing. It is looking a little juicier than I expect.

Now all that's left is to swap out the oil a few times, and see where we go.  Should be ok though.

Thanks for all the help!!
