Man, that pix looks like someone hurled in the engine. Makes me feel like it, now, too.
All that silicone seal makes me nervous: if a PO sealed the crankcases with that much of it, I would be concerned that the oil passages at the alternator end and the points end of the crankshaft may be blocked from too much of that stuff. Those passages are small and the sealant, if there is too much, can ooze into the passages when reassembling. Just a thought.
Crankcases should never be sealed with silicone sealant: it should always be the latex-based stuff that you can get at most bike shops. The latex stuff, if a bit of it gets into those oil passages, will dissolve and ooze through the bearings and out into the crankcase, pass back through the pump and get trapped in the filter (or tank) later, with little or no damage anywhere. Silicone will just block the passages...
