What does your tach read at 60mph?
« on: July 13, 2009, 05:31:22 PM »
I read posts all the time where people say they things like "I hit 80 in third gear"

I was wondering where people shift when they are cruising. I usually keep my tach at around 3,000 rpms. When I'm doing 60 (or 70, according to my spedometer) my rpms are around 6,000. Seems like if I went 80 in third, my engine would explode.

What are your thoughts?

The way my speedo and tach are I don't know.  60mph in 2nd gear (+ or - 10mph) is about 7500rpm (+ or - 2000rpm)
As you should be able to tell, my gauges are about ready to go on vacation.

Do you guys cruise at those high rpms? If you're going 60 in third gear, do you hang out in third or do you shift up to fifth? Are there benefits?

I hang out in 5th

I like to keep the motor between 3500 and 5500rpms it seems to be nicer to the motor :-\ :)

Agreed.

For cruising at 60mph, my engine is churning at around 4,400 rpm. CB750k7 with 17 front sprocket, 48 rear in 5th gear.

CB750K2 or CB750K4, 60mph, 4000 rpm.

CB750K4 -Cruising at 85mph, 5800 -6000 rpm, 5th gear, 18/48, stock pipes etc. Did this riding from Boston, MA to Mid-Ohio last year.

CB750K4 - 100-110 mph, 7000rpm(?maybe?), a couple of hours on the Autobahn heading to Munich, hanging on for dear life and hoping I dont have to brake suddenly  ;D

cheers

how high should u let the rpms go before shifting? is it bad to shift just before the redline? compared to the video? i can hit 95 mph in third at 9000.... but 60 in fifth is around 4, 4 and ahalf

I shift at 6000 normally, unless I'm passing, or having fun. then it's 9000rpm

Yup...I agree on the high RPM's spanner.  I usually shift between 4 - 5.  No need to put my investment through unusual high stess... ::)

Me too spanner.  I usually shift somewhere between 3000-5000 rpm though once in awhile I will "run it up".

On my 76F1 it's 4000rpm at 55mph, 4500rpm at 60mph, and 5000rpm at 65mph.  Stock set up.

These I-4's are meant to be revved up a wee bit. Heck they would barely stay charged if you guys keep the RPM's that low.

350F - 6000RPM!

+1...and how sweet the sound out of those 4into2 Jardines.
I spend very little ride time, maybe 10%, above 60 on this old bike.
I shift around 6500rpm, cruise ~5500rpm.
