One more reason why I hate PO's.

This hack job on the coil wire was wraped in duct tape!

Notice how stiff the lead wire is? it needs to be replaced!

Here is an orginal metal spark plug cap. I'm going to save this and use a modern one.

Trim the lead wire and gather the repair parts!

Before the questions are asked, the splice is from NGK and the coil wire I ordered from my local Honda dealer, a 1981 CB650C # 4 plug wire. Total cost was under $ 20.00, BTW, all Honda coil wire is 7mm.

Arg................

Anyone know where to get a 24 inch long JIS phillips head screwdriver?

While attempting to dis-assemble the front forks I discovered the pistons are secured by a phillips head screw from the inside.

 You sure about that?
I thought it was only the hydraulic lock screwed in to bottom?
I think you can untwist the chrome cover on fork and something unscrews on top of slider (its at least 30 yrs since I did one)
Fork bushings are pressed into leg holding it together (I made new ones because I was training to be precision machinist,
1974~75)
My sister  learned wrenching on S90, ( she could 'do' top end rebuild in about 45mins, got a lot of practice  ;D)
My brother had a 90mph one

You are right!

In my haste, I ended up drilling out the bottom screw only to discover I just needed to pull harder after removing the seal snap ring. At least I did not cause any major damage.

Pictures in next post.

Here is one of the front forks dis-assembled. In my haste, I convenced myself the lower bolt which I thought secured a piston needed to be removed. I wrong I was. I spent all day today carefully drilling out that bolt only to discover what a "Gomer" I was.

Oh well, live and learn, at least 8mm allen bolts are easy to get hold of and you can now get damper rod out to see what you need to make to hold it in position ( and take pic so everyone else will know  ;D)

Just a note others about letting parts sit in phospheric acid too long, make double sure none of the parts are made from a zinc alloy! It appears the swingarm bolt and the lower shock mounts on the S90 have a small qty of zinc in their composition.

Here is the swing arm bolt after sitting in solution for a week.

And here are the lower shock mounts (notice the missing threads?).

Well the front forks are rebuilt, not a very hard job to do, once you know how to dis-assemble them. I sure hope one or two of you have learned from my mistakes.

Other progress, I have located a replacement swingarm and bolt, most parts are now painted (fuel tank will be last), wire harness has been installed. I have held off installing the engine as the condenser I purchased was a single wire one instead of the two wire one I need. This mounts on top of the engine so without it, it does no good to install the engine.

Over the next several weeks I'm going to tackle the front and rear wheels. I need new rims and spokes so it may take awhile to gather all the needed parts.

More pictures at next post.

Here are a few more pictures.

This is the frame all painted with the wire harness installed. It sure would have been nice to have one of my grand children around to install the harness.

As I said, the front forks are rebuilt. Here they are. The upper guides locate on the lower tripple tree so they will be set in place when they are installed.

My goal for this weekend is to mount the front forks and swingarm while I wait for parts to rebuild the wheels.

Some may ask why is it taking so long? Well the short answer is time and money. Many of the parts I want / need are in located in the far east and this is not a "at any cost" resoration.

Hi Tom,
I wouldn't ask, I suffer from lack of enthusiasm as well as the time/money 'thing'  ;)

Nice CB50, never seen one like that, only leading link S50/S65 (and multiple S90's)

Hi  strynboen,
you need to start a few threads so as not to hijack this one  ;D
that's a later 'Fizzer' with disc brake, early ones were drum, clocked one at 63mph after rotary valve was modified.

Your bike is looking fantastic and has got me excited about mine.  I also have a 67 s90 that was my fathers and has been sitting in the shed for the last 20+ years.

How did you get the engine so clean? It looks brand new!

one more question, what is the switch on the left controls for?  mine says L/H

do you know anywhere to get a replacement switch, mine is missing.

I would appreciate your help, this will be my first restoration.

Thanks,
Dave
