So... what's next, debtor prisons run by corporate entities?
Everyone is a potential criminal?

Maybe Texas - they're making noises about seceding and have a loophole to pull it off.  I like Texas more every day.

Yeah, Texas, the most polluted state in the Union.  Sounds like paradise.  Crappy schools, crappy public infrastructure.  Sometimes you get what you pay for.

As much as all of us don't like to pay taxes it is part of the cost of living in a civil society.  Big time tax cheats are costing you and I more so I have no problem with them being hunted down though I do not like the idea of the private sector bounty hunters.  This should fit right in with conservative philosophy about farming out government functions to the private sector though.

I may have been a bit harsh.  I'm never happy when famous folks threaten to leave the country and frankly I wish they'd go instead of never following through on their promises.  Through thick and thin, we're in the greatest country in the world.  For that, I am very appreciative.

My remarks are a tongue in cheek reaction to bills being signed into law without any of the signers ever having time to read them.  We're on a rail.... to where, unknown.  Much more is on the way.

I still like Texas :)

Aw damn...I see an invasion in our future...trust me guys all the stereotypes are true. I live in an igloo and we only get 2 hours of day light a year, polar bears roam the streets and we don't even have electricity. You don't wanna move up here!  ;)

It's not my intent to offend - I'm sure you're from the greatest country in the world as well :)  I'm sorry to say that I've not been to Australia and it is a place I've always wanted to see.  I've often thought that the ideals and philosophies of the US and Australia were sort of "kindred".

I do love my country (without apology) and have consternation over many here that dislike it (our country).  To them, I say.... go try something else.

I have been through parts of Europe (a few months), Mexico (border towns mostly) and the Caribbean (bunch of islands).  On my short list of places to go is Canada (been within a few short miles many times), Australia and Japan.  Given the time and resources, that list would be larger.  Having said that, there's plenty of the US I still need to see.

No offense taken Gamma, and yes i do live in the best country in the world as well.  ;)
I also have to see more of my own country, lots of incredible formations and wilderness to see, {just like your country}. I was never questioning your country just interested thats all. If you ever get down this way include New Zealand in you places to see list, it is also a very pretty and unique country.

At least this "summer" it may be true.  We are rethinking our sailing trip from Thunder Bay to the Slate islands on Lake Superior due to the cool weather.  50-60 degrees on Lake Superior is not much fun as we have no heater on our small 22 foot sailboat.

I don't think you will have to worry too much about an invasion from our gloom and doom conservatives.  After all you have that "socialized medical care ".  ;)

Try South Carolina, Nevada and New Mexico.  South Carolina and a couple of other states in that area have some of the worst records for pollution and contamination in the US.

Nevada and New Mexico's atomic testing gave cancer to people in a lot of surrounding states....... it's a matter of public record that an atomic blast in New Mexico ruined photographic film at Eastman Kodak in New York.

In fact, a trouble shooter at Eastman Kodak was able to realize the US had set off an atomic bomb, less than 3 days after the very first test in New Mexico, because of the radiation damage in New York.

Fiscally I tend think of myself as a libertarian but how do people think you can privatise necessary things health care, energy, fire protection, prisons to for profit companies and think that is a good thing. There are some things that are better off left to government or not-for-profit agencies.

I agree completely.

Water- here mostly government run, I guess they have done an OK job.

Food- don't really want the govt. there too much but look at the wonderful job corporations have done to screw up a good part of our food supply in the US. Yeah, the corporates have screwed that up pretty well indeed.

Try coming down here and looking, Houston has some pollution, as does Dallas, but we are far from the most polluted state.  We have the best job market in the country, the best property value retention, no state income tax, and a state surplus in our budget.    Man it must suck to be in Texas and have a job and not owe $400k on a $200k house.   LOL

OR a person could come to ND. We DO have state income tax but we also have a budget surplus and out housing retains its value very welll. We might not pay as much but then we do not need as much to live. Plus we have very few border jumpers and much less pollution than texas. And come to think about it, we have not had much for job losses here either. So maybe texas isnt the best?

Never said texas was the best (though I keep coming back and I have lived in several states) but right now we are number 1 for job growth.  Even in tough times like this I don't worry if I can find a job,  I worry I might no find a job I love.
Plus it doesn't get as cold and you can ride pretty much all year (I used to ride all year, but those 20 degree days will freese you to death) ;D

Lucky bastard ;D  Brisbane is a great city and Sydney is one of the most beautiful cities in the world IMO.  I was over there  a few years ago.  Now if you could just get the cost of  buying and owning a motorcycle down....
