Just like the subject says, WTF is wrong with my dog??

looks like some kind of flea or food allergy. have you changed food type/brand recently? might ought to get him to a vet though, thats a pretty ugly looking wound

Picture alone does not help too much. What was he doing before? Any spiders, or other things he may have come across?

That picture shows no context or scale.
My first reaction was that it's a tumor coming through the skin. Yes- I've seen it before.
2nd thought was (s)he was in a fight.
Vet time ASAP.

There's no way to know if he came across a spider; they're everywhere. However, my boxer isn't having any trouble.

We didn't notice it until a week ago or so; we saw blood through his fur. As soon as we noticed it we cleaned the area with alcohol and mild antibacterial soap. It wasn't nearly this bad at the time (just looked like a scratch/cut). We watched it closely and noticed that he wanted to continually scratch it so we got him a "lamp shade" to protect him from himself. He wore that for about 4 days and today's the 5th. It smells "funny" but doesn't smell like gangrene/flesh rot (I would've recognized the smell from my experience with cows on the farm).

We're taking him to the vet tomorrow but we were just wondering if anyone else had any ideas.

Put some Neosporin/triple antibiotic ointment on it at the least once it's been cleaned

My little Fox Terrier has something similar on his belly, took him to vet and he said it was probably food allergy.
We put the cats bowl where he can't steal her food and it healed up nicely, seems cat biscuits have too much fat content and are bad for dogs.

Stop mucking around and take the poor bloody animal to a vet!

It looks like mange to me and some types of mange are contagious to humans.

We took him to the vet first thing this morning. We'll know what it is when we pick him up at 7 tonight.

Does look like a hot spot...my dog used to get those. Would be curious to see what your vet says though.

we had a cat that had hair fall out due to a grain allergy, but that was just a sort of alopecia.. not wet and harsh looking like that. good call on the vet.

When we got one of our kittens she had something similar but smaller on her neck. Was caused by some type of a fly laying eggs.

He's home tonight but I'm not completely sure what the vet said because I got home after everyone went to bed. It doesn't look nearly as bad; it's not wet/pussy/bleeding anymore. I'll have to ask on the morrow to see exactly what they did.

The results: They're not sure. They scraped it off and cleaned it really well, applied anti-itch/anti-bacterial/anti-fungal cream and gave him an antibiotic. It looks a lot better this morning and he's not as depressed. Things seem to be looking up.
